Richard’s unique background made him an ideal expert for this discussion. Having served in the British Army for 30 years, he also held the role of a tank commander during his military career. The Journey Through Tank Roles
According to Richard, becoming a tank commander is not a direct path but rather a process that involves mastering multiple roles within the tank. He explained that each tank crew member has a specific function: the driver, the loader, the gunner, and the commander. Before someone can even consider taking on the role of the commander, they must go through extensive training in each of these positions.
The journey begins with basic infantry training, which is identical to the training received by other soldiers in the army. This foundational phase ensures that individuals understand the basics of combat and survival. Following this, trainees may specialize in roles such as gunner or driver, typically requiring a six to eight-week course.
Once a soldier gains experience in these roles, they may progress to become a loader. This position is crucial as the loader is responsible for loading ammunition, operating the radio, and acting as the second-in-command within the tank. It’s a step that requires both technical skill and leadership abilities.
The Role of a Tank Commander
The ultimate goal for many soldiers is to become the tank commander. This role is considered the most prestigious within the tank crew. The commander is responsible for commanding the vehicle, communicating with other tanks, and making critical decisions during combat. To reach this position, a soldier must have at least four to eight years of service in the army and hold the rank of corporal.
Richard emphasized that a tank commander must be fully qualified in all other roles within the tank. This comprehensive understanding allows them to make informed decisions and effectively lead their crew in the field. The progression to this role is not only about skill but also about experience and leadership.
TANKFEST 2025 and the King Tiger
TANKFEST 2025, the world’s largest showcase of historic vehicles, provided the perfect backdrop for this discussion. One of the highlights of the event was the restoration of the iconic King Tiger tank by the Musée des Blindés. This remarkable feat of engineering brought the tank back to full running condition, showcasing the dedication and expertise of the team involved.
Additionally, the Musée des Blindés worked to transport another King Tiger tank to British soil. This effort ensured the safe and secure movement of the 70-ton vehicle across borders and water from France. The collaboration between the Musée des Blindés and World of Tanks, the principal sponsor of TANKFEST, facilitated the entire transit process.
Thanks to the sponsorship, the world’s only running King Tiger tank was delivered to the shores of the United Kingdom for the first time ever.
