PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (WCAX) – Pupils from various parts of New York’s North Country are stepping back in time to experience a day as an American Revolutionary War soldier. This is part of a set of one-day camps, with this week’s event taking place at the historic Kent-Delord House Museum in Plattsburgh.
“We have ten new recruits who have been undergoing training,” said Craig Russell, the lead instructor at the Revolutionary War Training Camp, assisting students in reenacting a scene from around 1776.
We have a wealth of local history, and it’s quite enjoyable to discover,” said Landon Sypek, a sixth-grade student from Peru Central School. “I learned a great deal about our local history in class, and I simply wanted to find out more about what I hadn’t known about this town.
The group received instruction on igniting fires, preparing meals, marching in unison, and using a musket, which was one of the most favored training activities.
“I enrolled in this camp because I love military history and particularly muskets — they’re really fascinating,” said Mason Hannemann, a senior from the Beekmantown Central School District.
“Just starting to study American history and beginning to learn about using a musket and musket cartridges, among other things,” said Devontee Frey.
Sussell mentions that the full-day program assists students in comprehending their origins and how the North Country was influenced by the Revolutionary War. “They should learn all about the broad perspective of their local history,” he stated.
Two additional camps are planned for August.
