Cam Newton Casts Doubt on Jalen Hurts’ Performance

Cam Newton’s Take on the Top NFL Quarterbacks

Former NFL quarterback Cam Newton recently shared his rankings of the top 10 quarterbacks in the league during an episode of his podcast, 4th & 1 with Cam Newton. Surprisingly, he omitted Philadelphia Eagles’ starting quarterback Jalen Hurts from the list. This decision sparked a lot of discussion among fans and analysts alike.

Newton’s list included some of the most prominent names in the league:

  1. Buffalo Bills, Josh Allen
  2. Baltimore Ravens, Lamar Jackson
  3. Kansas City Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes
  4. Cincinnati Bengals, Joe Burrow
  5. Los Angeles Rams, Matt Stafford
  6. Detroit Lions, Jared Goff
  7. Washington Commanders, Jayden Daniels
  8. Houston Texans, C.J. Stroud
  9. Los Angeles Chargers, Justin Herbert
  10. Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Baker Mayfield

Newton explained his reasoning for not including Hurts, stating that the quarterback has too much talent around him to be judged fairly. He pointed out that Hurts benefits from having star players like AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith on the receiving end, along with a strong defense and one of the best running backs in the league.

“Jalen Hurts is a great quarterback, but if we’re talking about what they bring to the table, it’s hard to judge what Jalen Hurts can do when you’re throwing to a guy like AJ Brown, DeVonta Smith, you have tight end skillset, you have a dominant defense, the best running back in the game,” Newton said. “Jalen Hurts does not have to play elite for the Philadelphia Eagles to win. He has to play good, but he doesn’t have to play elite. We’re not asking you to win the game, we’re just asking you not to lose it.”

Despite this, many believe that Hurts still faces unnecessary doubt as an elite quarterback. He has consistently shown his accuracy and ability to run the ball when needed, making him a perfect dual-threat quarterback. Moreover, he has led his team to the Super Bowl twice, proving his capability to perform under pressure.

It’s also worth noting that Hurts and the Eagles entered the 2024 season with a lot to prove after a disappointing 10-1 start the previous year. However, they went on to win the Super Bowl, showcasing their resilience and determination.

While Hurts may not always dominate the stat sheet like some of the other elite quarterbacks, his ability to win games is undeniable. He has proven time and again that he can find a way to win even without the best supporting cast.

Hurts’ journey has been a testament to his character and leadership. He has faced challenges head-on and continued to improve each season. His performance has earned respect from fans and peers alike, and it’s clear that he is a key player in the NFL today.

As the league continues to evolve, so do the expectations for its quarterbacks. Hurts has already made a name for himself, and there’s no doubt that he will continue to rise in the rankings. Whether or not he makes it onto future lists remains to be seen, but one thing is certain—Jalen Hurts is a force to be reckoned with.
