Pros
It lies about 2.5 kilometers from downtown Christchurch and is easily reachable via multiple bus lines. The rental cost is fairly reasonable (between NZD160 and NZD200 weekly), and being close to the Central Business District provides convenient access to part-time positions in cafes, the hospitality sector, and retail.
Cons
It is quite a distance from the University of Canterbury, which could be less convenient for those studying there. There are fewer international students living in this area, making it feel less like a standard student neighborhood.
Phillipstown
Phillipstown is a compact urban neighborhood situated to the southeast of the city’s central area. It features a blend of residential, business, and manufacturing zones.
Pros
The neighborhood offers convenient access to Christchurch’s top universities and educational institutions. Several bus lines travel through or close to Phillipstown, connecting it to downtown Christchurch, the universities, the airport, and various areas of the city.
Cons
Residential properties in this neighborhood have traditionally been budget-friendly. Nevertheless, rent prices have risen over the past few years.
Linwood
Linwood is a residential area located to the east of the city center, primarily between Ferry Road and Linwood Avenue, which are key routes leading to the eastern parts of the city. It lies roughly 2 kilometers east of Christchurch’s central business district, translating to a roughly 10-minute drive into the city center.
Pros
The Ara Institute of Canterbury is a leading polytechnic providing diplomas, degrees, and practical training programs. It has campuses located in central Christchurch, making it conveniently accessible from Linwood.
Cons
Certain areas of Linwood might appear less up-to-date or require additional community and development efforts in comparison to newer or more affluent neighborhoods.
Ilam
