Brisbane Lions’ Zac Bailey Rushes Home After Family Health Crisis

Zac Bailey’s Return and the Lions’ Victory

Zac Bailey, a standout player for the Brisbane Lions this season, recently made the difficult decision to fly back to Adelaide to be with his family after his mother suffered a serious stroke. The 25-year-old forward was already out of action for Friday night’s clash against the Western Bulldogs due to a suspension. However, the timing of his absence turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

Brisbane Lions coach Chris Fagan confirmed on Saturday that Bailey’s absence was not just due to the suspension but also because of the urgent need to be with his family. “It was probably timely that he was out, because his mum had a stroke earlier in the week,” Fagan told SEN. “So he sort of went back to Adelaide to see her. And I thought to myself, I don’t really think he should play this week.”

Bailey had received a one-match ban for a high bump on Carlton’s Nick Haynes, a suspension that the club unsuccessfully challenged at the tribunal. Despite the troubling situation, Fagan provided some reassurance, stating, “The good news is his mum’s going to be OK.”

Bailey has been a key player for the Lions this season, scoring 26 goals from 17 games. This week’s match marked the first time he had missed all year. Fagan confirmed that the dynamic forward will return next week, “fresh from a week off.”

A Tough Win for the Lions

Despite the challenges, the Brisbane Lions held firm to claim their fourth straight AFL win. They defeated the Western Bulldogs 12.14 (86) to 12.4 (76) in a tough tussle at the Gabba. The 10-point victory came after the Bulldogs mounted a late surge, with Will Ashcroft kicking a goal on the siren. This win significantly boosts the Lions’ chances of securing a top-four finish.

The victory also allowed the Lions to celebrate the milestone of midfielder Hugh McCluggage’s 200th AFL match in style. For the Bulldogs, the defeat leaves them in a precarious position in the finals race, having lost eight of the nine matches they’ve played against teams above them on the ladder.

Key Performers

Rhylee West was the star for the Bulldogs, kicking a game-high four goals. For the Lions, Will Ashcroft contributed three majors, while his brother Levi was one of three players, along with Kai Lohmann and Jarrod Berry, to kick two goals each. Aaron Naughton added two goals for the visitors.

On the other side, Lions midfielder Josh Dunkley shone against his former club, recording 14 tackles and 28 disposals. Meanwhile, Bailey Dale had 33 touches, the most for the Bulldogs.

Looking Ahead

With Bailey set to return next week, the Lions are in a strong position as the season progresses. Their ability to handle adversity, both on and off the field, highlights the resilience of the team and its players. As they continue their campaign, fans will be hoping for more consistent performances and a successful run in the finals.
