A Unique Event for Community and Agricultural Support
In Bridgeport, West Virginia, the McCray Cattle Company is bringing a new kind of excitement to the town with the Bridgeport Cattle Battle. This event, which kicked off on Friday night, is the first-ever two-night bull riding event hosted by the group. It aims to support the Bridgeport Future Farmers of America (FFA) Alumni and Supporters Chapter, showcasing the power of community collaboration.
Each night, the gates open at 5:30 p.m., with bull riding action starting at 7 p.m. The event offers something for everyone, including mutton busting for kids, mini bull riding, novice competitions, and professional bull riding. Admission is set at $20 for adults and $10 for children. Importantly, 75% of the proceeds from the Cattle Battle will go directly to the FFA, helping to fund their programs and initiatives.
Building Community and Supporting Future Leaders
Gracie Burdette, the Bridgeport FFA Treasurer, shared her excitement about the event. “We’ve never really had anything like this in Bridgeport, and it’s great to be able to open this event to the community and different parts, having the FFA working with McCray Cattle Company. And we’re excited to get to show Bridgeport we can work together and what this can be like for everyone,” she said.
The Cattle Battle isn’t just about entertainment—it’s also a way to raise funds for the FFA’s various activities. Burdette emphasized the importance of community support, noting that the FFA has many expenses, including trips to national competitions. “This is going to help us go to nationals in Indiana, Indianapolis, which is an expensive cost, but it’s a lot and it helps so much,” she added.
A Legacy of Agriculture and Leadership
Jared McCray, the owner of McCray Cattle Company and a 2005 graduate of Bridgeport High School, shared his personal connection to the FFA. At the time, he had to travel to Liberty High School to attend agriculture classes and participate in FFA because the program wasn’t available in Bridgeport. He believes the Cattle Battle is a great way to support the school’s greenhouse and other FFA projects, including competitions and conventions.
“FFA helps you set up a lot of success, it helps you build character that you would not normally get in life, it helps with leadership, speaking to people, public speaking, because so many people are so scared of public speaking, which is a very scary thing,” Burdette explained. “So, being in FFA, you get to learn how to speak to people, speak in competitions, and just let your voice be heard. FFA builds leaders for our future, and it’s really needed.”
More Than Just a Rodeo
The Cattle Battle also offers a variety of additional attractions. Attendees can enjoy food trucks and shop at a Western boutique on site. McCray Cattle Company officials noted their active involvement with the West Virginia High School Rodeo Association, further strengthening their commitment to agricultural education and youth development.
Additionally, McCray Cattle Company is home to the only bull-riding practice pen in the Mountain State, making it a unique destination for rodeo enthusiasts and aspiring riders alike.
This event is more than just a celebration of rodeo culture—it’s a testament to the power of community, education, and shared goals. By coming together, local residents and organizations are creating opportunities for young people to grow, lead, and succeed. The Bridgeport Cattle Battle is a step toward building a stronger, more connected future for all.
