A Celebration of Style and Sustainability at the Sapphire Style Awards

The sun was shining over The Curragh on Saturday, creating a perfect backdrop for an event that combined fashion, tradition, and a touch of glamour. Racegoers in blue attire made their way through the gates, their outfits and accessories catching the light as they moved through the crowd. This was the setting for the Sapphire Style Awards, where some of Ireland’s most stylish women showcased their fashion sense in a competition that highlighted both creativity and sustainability.

Brian Dowling and Arthur Gourounlian were given the challenging task of selecting an overall winner from a group of 10 standout participants. Their criteria for choosing the best-dressed entrant included looking for something unique, something that stood out from the norm. Brian emphasized the importance of individuality, stating that he was drawn to those who “don’t really play by the rules.” He also noted the growing awareness around sustainability, appreciating outfits that had been reused, borrowed, or rented.

Arthur echoed this sentiment, highlighting the difference between someone wearing an outfit and an outfit wearing someone. For him, confidence and personal style were key elements in determining the winner.

After careful consideration, Annamarie Conroy emerged victorious at the Sapphire Style Awards, which had the theme “Shine in Blue.” As a mother of three and a merchandising professional at Vera Moda in Athlone, Annamarie brought a mix of elegance and practicality to her look. Her sapphire suit, nearly 15 years old, was sourced from Karen Millen, while her hat came from Alison Roe Millinery. However, the true standout piece of her outfit was her mother’s cream blouse, which had been passed down for five decades.

Annamarie shared the story behind her choice of clothing, explaining that her mother often told her to “keep everything, because you never know when you might need it.” This philosophy clearly influenced her approach to the event. She also borrowed a choker from her mother-in-law to complete her ensemble, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability and reusing items rather than buying new.

Her shoes, purchased from Dune several years ago, and her white bag, which also belonged to her mother, further added to the nostalgic and thoughtful nature of her outfit. Annamarie emphasized that comfort is essential when dressing for the races, noting that she always aims to feel at ease while looking great.

For Annamarie, the color sapphire held special significance. It is her birthstone, and she felt strongly about incorporating the exact shade into her outfit. “I didn’t want to go for a pale blue, or a navy, or turquoise. I had to have the colour or I wasn’t going!” she said, reflecting her personality and determination.

When asked why they chose Annamarie as the winner, Brian praised her unique style, pointing out that she broke away from traditional race-day fashion with her choice of trousers and a blazer. He also appreciated the vintage elements of her outfit, including the shoes, hat, and hair. Annamarie’s story of borrowing items from family members added a heartfelt touch to her win.

Annamarie walked away with a prize that included a €5,000 sapphire jewellery piece from Weir & Sons, as well as a luxurious two-night stay at Barberstown Castle. Her victory not only celebrated her personal style but also highlighted the importance of sustainability and family heritage in fashion choices.

As a regular at the races, Annamarie is no stranger to the vibrant atmosphere of events like the Champions Festival in September. With her unique blend of style, practicality, and sustainability, she proved that putting your best foot forward can lead to unforgettable moments.
