Development of Bentley’s First Electric SUV
A mule for Bentley’s upcoming electric crossover has been spotted on the Nürburgring, signaling significant progress in its development. This vehicle is based on the Porsche Cayenne Electric, but the final production model will feature a unique design tailored to Bentley’s luxury standards.
The Luxury Urban SUV is set to make its debut next year and will enter production in 2027. This marks a major shift for Bentley as it moves toward its goal of becoming fully electric by 2035, as outlined in their Beyond100+ strategic plan. The electric crossover will serve as the brand’s first production electric vehicle (EV), leading the way for future models.
Bentley recently introduced its first electric vehicle, which sparked a range of reactions from the public. While the EXP 15 concept received mixed feedback, it was used to explore the idea of an ultra-luxury sedan reimagined as a crossover. Despite this, the concept itself will not go into production. Instead, Bentley is focusing on a “Luxury Urban SUV” that will embody the brand’s new styling language.
Design and Development Progress
The mysterious crossover has moved from Northern Europe to the Nürburgring as development continues. However, the model is still a mule based on the upcoming Porsche Cayenne Electric. This doesn’t provide much insight into the final design of the Bentley, although the British license plates are a clear indicator of its origin.
Porsche has been heavily promoting the upcoming electric crossover, highlighting its ability to combine performance, everyday usability, long-distance comfort, and off-road suitability. The model will be built on the PPE platform and will have a maximum towing capacity of up to 7,716 lbs (3,500 kg). Additionally, it will feature an Active Ride system that keeps the body level at all times, even during dynamic braking, steering, and acceleration.
Performance and Specifications
One of the biggest questions surrounding the vehicle is its performance specifications. However, the Macan Electric offers some hints. It has outputs ranging from 355 hp (265 kW / 360 PS) to 630 hp (470 kW / 639 PS). Buyers can also expect a 100 kWh battery pack, which delivers EPA-estimated ranges between 288 and 315 miles (463 and 507 km).
The crossover is scheduled to debut next year, with production set to begin in 2027. Bentley has trademarked the names Barnato and Mayon, suggesting they could be potential names for the model. Applications for both trademarks indicate they may be used for electric vehicles and other automotive-related equipment.
