Bedford Home’s Three-Year Ofsted Outstanding Streak

A Unique Approach to Respite Care at Foxgloves Children’s Home

At Foxgloves Children’s Home, located on Bromham Road, the success of the facility is attributed to the strong relationships formed between staff and the families and young people they support. This connection plays a crucial role in creating a positive and nurturing environment for children with special needs.

Alex Milligan, the registered homes manager, shared insights into the home’s philosophy: “We just aim to do the best we can, all the time. It’s the young people that make all the difference to us, and we take pride in making sure they get to enjoy experiences that they otherwise wouldn’t get.” These experiences often include trips and holidays, which are considered highlights for both the children and the team. Visits to places like Legoland, Norfolk, or even a train journey to Brighton are some of the memorable outings that the home organises.

Over the years, the needs of the children who stay at Foxgloves have become more complex. Some of them are non-verbal and non-signing, yet they still find ways to communicate their desires. For example, they might start packing their suitcases at home to show that they want to visit the home. This level of communication showcases the trust and understanding that has been built between the children, their families, and the staff.

Foxgloves is a respite care home that provides short breaks for children with special educational needs (SEND). The home serves a pool of around 20 young people, with up to six staying at any given time. This model allows for focused care and support tailored to each child’s individual requirements.

The quality of care provided at Foxgloves has not gone unnoticed. The home has consistently received an ‘outstanding’ rating in each of its last three Ofsted inspections. Inspectors have praised the “highly effective services that consistently exceed the standards of good,” noting that the actions of the children’s home contribute to significantly improved outcomes and positive experiences for children and young people who need help, protection, and care.

Alex highlighted the rarity of such consistent recognition: “There’s not many short-break homes that consistently receive ‘outstanding’ ratings, but it’s a fantastic job and I couldn’t ask for more from our dedicated team.”

Councillor Jane Walker, portfolio holder for Valuing Families: Children’s Services, has also spoken highly of the home. She mentioned that she visits Foxgloves regularly and is consistently impressed by the efforts and the care shown by the team. Her comments reflect the broader community’s appreciation for the work being done at the home.
