A Comprehensive Boxing Masterclass in Lagos
A recent boxing masterclass hosted by Balmoral Group Promotions in Lagos brought together industry experts and Nigeria’s heavyweight star Efe Ajagba to provide valuable insights to young boxers on the business side of the sport. The event, held at the Balmoral Convention Centre in the Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, aimed to educate participants on how to build sustainable careers in professional boxing.
Key Insights from Industry Leaders
Balmoral CEO, Dr Ezekiel Adamu, was one of the key speakers at the event. He emphasized the importance of Nigeria hosting major boxing events rather than sending fighters abroad. His vision is for the country to become a hub for significant fights, reducing the need for boxers to travel overseas and potentially lose opportunities.

Adamu highlighted the need for a structured approach to the sport. He pointed out that the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBofC) should ensure that promoters are adequately compensated, which would help maintain the integrity and financial health of the sport.
Efe Ajagba’s Personal Journey
WBC silver title holder Efe Ajagba shared his personal journey from Nigeria to America, offering advice to young boxers about the risks of poor contract negotiations. He admitted that he signed a wrong contract as an inexperienced boxer but later found the courage to change it. Ajagba encouraged young athletes to stay passionate and not let delays hinder their progress.
Education and Contract Awareness
Dr Barr. Uzoamaka Orakwue stressed the importance of education for boxers. She noted that passion alone is not enough to sustain a career. Education, she said, is crucial for protecting boxers from exploitation, especially when it comes to contracts and self-development.
Orakwue also provided detailed guidance on managing contracts and the role of managers. She advised boxers not to settle for short-term gains and instead focus on long-term success.
NBBofC’s Commitment to Fighters
Nigeria Boxing Board of Control President Dr Rafiu Ladipo highlighted the board’s commitment to protecting fighters’ interests. He mentioned that boxers must now have managers to be eligible for fights. Additionally, the NBBofC has a lawyer who will review contracts if they are submitted seven days before a fight.
Experience from a Sports Entrepreneur
Sports entrepreneur and boxing manager Babatunde Koiki shared his experience in managing boxers and offered practical advice on how they can protect themselves. He emphasized the importance of signing contracts with managers who have proven track records of helping athletes succeed.
Encouraging Research and Informed Decisions
Adamu also noted that Ajagba left Nigeria when he was younger and less informed. He encouraged current boxers to do thorough research to secure the best deals for themselves. He advised them to choose managers who understand the sport and can help them navigate the complexities of professional boxing.
Support for Grassroots Development
The masterclass attracted a diverse audience, including young boxers, coaches, and other stakeholders in the Nigerian boxing community. Lagos State Sports Commission representative Ifeoluwa Ogunlaja pledged continued support for grassroots development, highlighting the importance of nurturing talent from an early stage.
This event marked a significant step towards building a stronger foundation for boxing in Nigeria. By focusing on education, contract awareness, and sustainable career development, the masterclass aimed to empower young boxers and ensure the sport’s growth in the region.
