Introducing the New Spin-Off: Ballard
A fresh chapter in the world of fictional detective storytelling is about to begin with the launch of the new Prime Video series, Ballard. This spin-off brings a compelling narrative centered around Detective Renée Ballard, played by Maggie Q, who leads the Los Angeles Police Department’s (LAPD) cold case review unit.
Ballard is set against the backdrop of the LAPD’s underfunded cold case division, where Detective Ballard is tasked with uncovering long-forgotten crimes with empathy and determination. As she delves into decades-old cases, including a serial killer’s string of murders and the murder of an unknown victim, she uncovers a dangerous conspiracy within the department.
With the support of her volunteer team and retired detective Harry Bosch, played by Titus Welliver, Detective Ballard must navigate personal trauma, professional challenges, and life-threatening dangers to expose the truth. The show promises a gripping mix of mystery, drama, and suspense.
Executive Producers’ Vision
Michael Connelly, the author of the 24 books featuring Harry Bosch, serves as an executive producer for this new series. He expressed his excitement about the show, stating, “I’ve seen it and know how good it is, and how Maggie Q absolutely captures the character of Renée Ballard.” Connelly praised the great writing, acting, directing, and production, adding that the show includes surprise appearances that are sure to make it a fan favorite.
Other executive producers, Michael Alaimo and Kendall Sherwood, described the series as “gritty, emotional, and grounded, with that layered storytelling that makes Michael Connelly’s world so compelling.”
Cast of Ballard
Maggie Q stars as Detective Renée Ballard, leading the cast in this new series. Known for her role as Nikita Mears in the television series Nikita, she has also appeared in various other roles, including Beth Davis / Michelle Webber in Stalker and Hannah Wells in Designated Survivor.
Courtney Taylor plays Samira Parker, a character returning to the LAPD to join the cold case unit. Taylor has appeared in several television shows, including Insecure, Abbott Elementary, and The Company You Keep.
John Carroll Lynch portrays Thomas Laffont, a retired police officer who assists Ballard in the cold case unit. Lynch has had a diverse career, appearing in films such as Fargo, Face/Off, and Shutter Island, as well as television series like American Horror Story and Big Sky.
Michael Mosley takes on the role of Ted Rawls, a reserve officer assigned to monitor Ballard’s work in cold cases. Mosley gained fame for his role in the medical drama Scrubs and has appeared in various other television and film projects.
