Azzi Fudd, a 22-year-old star on the University of Connecticut (UConn) women’s basketball team, recently shared an endearing story about how she got her nickname, which has become a part of her identity in college basketball. The origin of the nickname is tied to her girlfriend and former teammate, Paige Bueckers.
During an appearance on the “Good Game With Sarah Spain” podcast, Fudd revealed that Bueckers gave her the nickname during a practice when they were teammates. The story came up while discussing brand partnerships and Fudd’s future aspirations. Spain jokingly suggested that Fudd could start a company called “The ‘s Princess.”
Fudd explained the origin of the nickname: “I think Paige made a comment about how I’m the princess because coach (Geno Auriemma) doesn’t yell at me, and somehow that morphed into calling me ‘The ‘s Princess.’” She laughed, adding, “Yeah, I’m not really sure. I know I’m not mad about it though.”
A Public Declaration of Love
Fudd and Bueckers have been open about their relationship since recently going public. This revelation followed months of speculation about their romantic connection. In June 2025, Fudd gained attention after posting a selfie on her Instagram Stories showing her holding a phone case that read, “Paige Bueckers’ Girlfriend.”
The couple has also shared photos of themselves wearing matching outfits and “A” and “P” necklaces. Before confirming their relationship, they were seen holding hands after a Dallas Wings game earlier this month. Their bond has been evident both on and off the court.

Fudd and Bueckers first met as teammates in 2017 with USA Basketball before joining forces again in college. They won the NCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship together last season. As Fudd prepares for her senior year at UConn, she admitted it will be strange not having Bueckers as her teammate this season. However, she plans to have her girlfriend join her for an episode on her new podcast, “Fudd Around and Find Out.”
“I have to use the cool around me,” Fudd joked.
