Passenger Growth at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport
Passenger totals at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport have been on a steady rise, with 2024 coming close to record levels. The airport is expected to see even more activity in 2025. In 2024, approximately 21.7 million passengers traveled through the airport, which was about 333,000 fewer than in 2023 but still 675,000 more than in 2022. This growth has surpassed initial forecasts by five years, indicating a strong trajectory for future expansion.
Tracking Passenger Numbers
To help keep track of these numbers, interactive charts have been created to break down the data and make it easier to navigate. These charts allow users to explore various aspects of passenger traffic, including:
- What’s the busiest year on record?
- What’s the busiest month on record?
- What’s the busiest day on record?
- Which airline carries the most passengers?
- Which airlines are seeing the most growth?
- Where does each airline fly from AUS?
- What new routes are coming in 2025?
- What routes have been canceled in 2025?
Busiest Year and Month
Although 2024 came close to breaking records, 2023 remains the busiest year on record at AUS, with over 22 million passengers. May 2024 stands as the busiest month ever, with nearly 2.07 million passengers. Only seven other months have exceeded 2 million passengers, including July 2023, October 2023, and others. So far in 2025, no monthly records have been set.
Busiest Day on Record
The busiest day on record was October 21, 2024, with over 44,000 passengers screened through TSA. This spike occurred after the F1 weekend and the University of Texas home football game against Georgia. Only two other days in history have broken the 40,000 passenger mark, both being Mondays in October following F1 weekends. Days during SXSW, Spring Break, and the Austin City Limits music festival also feature in the top 10 busiest days.
Leading Airlines by Passenger Traffic
Southwest Airlines is the largest airline operating at AUS, accounting for 41.5% of all passengers this year. American Airlines follows with 17.1%, while Delta Air Lines has 16.6% and United Airlines has 13%. Alaska Airlines is fifth with 3.2% of passengers. Southwest alone has transported over 3.4 million passengers, while American has carried more than 1.4 million, Delta over 1.3 million, and United over 1 million.
Airlines Seeing the Most Growth
A chart displaying year-over-year growth in passenger totals shows that some airlines have seen significant increases. For example, Delta Air Lines experienced a 13% increase in January 2025 compared to January 2024, while JetBlue Airways saw a 68% drop. The chart uses color coding to indicate whether passenger numbers increased (green) or decreased (red) compared to previous years.
