Asia’s Stunning Island Bolsters Resort Security After Attack on Australian Tourists

Indonesia’s holiday island Bali has increased security measures at its resorts following a fatal shooting last month that claimed the life of an Australian citizen.

Deputy Tourism Minister Ni Luh Puspa said there has been no noticeable decline in Australian tourist arrivals following the shooting,

“We continue to see growth in the number of Australian tourists each year. Australia remains one of the largest sources of visitors to Bali. I hope this incident does not affect that trend,” she added.

To prevent similar incidents in the future, the ministry has urged hotel operators to bolster security within their premises,

On June 14, two Australian citizens were shot at the Casa Santisya 1 Villa in Munggu Village, Badung District, leaving one victim dead and another injured.

Authorities quickly apprehended three Australian nationals believed to be involved in the incident.

Bali was named Asia’s most beautiful island in this year’s annual Reader’s Choice Awards by DestinAsian magazine. In October last year, the island received the same recognition from readers of Condé Nast Traveler in its Readers’ Choice Awards.

Bali welcomed 6.3 million foreign visitors in 2024, surpassing pre-pandemic levels, and aims to attract 6.5 million tourists this year.

To address misbehavior and improve its tourism image amid the travel boom, the island has recently introduced new guidelines for foreign visitors.
