Opportunities for Youth Involvement in Oak Ridge
The city of Oak Ridge is currently seeking enthusiastic students to join two important advisory boards for the 2025-26 school year. These opportunities offer young residents a chance to make a meaningful impact on their community while gaining valuable experience in leadership and civic engagement.
Youth Advisory Board (YAB) Openings
The Youth Advisory Board (YAB) is looking for 16 new members who will serve a one-year term starting in August. The selection process will take place during the Aug. 11 City Council meeting. To qualify, applicants must be residents of Oak Ridge and entering grades 8 through 12.
Members of the YAB are expected to attend bi-monthly meetings held every Wednesday at 2 p.m., as well as participate in special events throughout the year. The primary goal of the YAB is to act as a bridge between the City Council and local youth, addressing issues that directly affect them. The board encourages positive growth and development by involving students in social, cultural, recreational, and drug-free and alcohol-free activities.
Environmental Quality Advisory Board (EQAB) Student Representatives
In addition to the YAB, the Environmental Quality Advisory Board (EQAB) is also accepting applications for student representatives. There are two openings: one for a one-year term and another for a two-year term. Students interested in environmental issues and sustainability can apply to represent their peers on this board.
EQAB meetings are typically held on the first Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. Participation requires regular attendance and active involvement in discussions about environmental policies and initiatives that impact the community.
How to Apply
Applications for both the YAB and EQAB are now open. Interested students can complete the online application form available on the City Clerk’s page at OakRidgeTN.gov/elections. Paper copies of the application are also available at the Oak Ridge Civic Center. Those who prefer a physical copy can call (865) 425-3450 from Monday to Friday between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. to arrange for pickup or mail delivery.
All applications, whether submitted online or by paper, must be received by the City Clerk’s Office by 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 1. Late submissions will not be accepted.
Benefits of Joining an Advisory Board
Serving on either the YAB or EQAB provides students with a unique opportunity to contribute to decision-making processes that shape the future of their community. It also allows them to develop essential skills such as communication, teamwork, and critical thinking. Additionally, these roles can enhance college applications and resumes by demonstrating civic responsibility and leadership abilities.
