She stated, “These were things that the church had contributed along with donations from several members. However, nobody seemed to recall who exactly had made these contributions.”

The visitor commented, “They believed it was something from the kitchen, originally belonging to the church, and they had only chosen to include it in the sale that same day.”

No matter the origin of the basket, the visitor found it incredibly attractive. She conveyed to McGehee, “I thought to myself, ‘Oh, they surely aren’t putting that up for sale.’”

The appraiser inquired of the visitor, “Generally speaking, do you have an appreciation for baskets?” The woman responded, “I adore baskets.” Following this, McGehee proceeded to ask, “What about you?”

The woman explained that she loved anything that’s American-made, folk art-type, and country.

McGehee subsequently confessed that she had never before encountered a basket similar to the one presented by the guest.

She stated, “The carvings found atop the intricately woven base of this basket are quite extraordinary. The bottom appears to be exceptionally closely woven.”

The appraiser mentioned that these baskets resembled those commonly found in Tennessee and Southeastern Virginia, and they likely had multiple uses, perhaps including collecting eggs.

McGehee added, “Even though it was discovered in a church, it might have served another function.” He then asked his guest if she had any idea about its possible use.

The woman responded, “It seemed to me like it was a collection basket meant for the church.”

The expert appeared astonished and remarked, “A carrying container. Indeed, this is quite an uncommon item. From the 19th century, I’d estimate. Most likely prior to 1880. You can see the use of cut nails here.”

McGehee inquired, “How much did you spend on the basket at your garage sale?” The visitor responded that they had purchased the peculiar object for three dollars.

The appraiser subsequently stunned the guest with the significant valuation of the basket, stating: “Were I to sell this in my store, I’d be asking for anywhere from $4,000 to $6,000 for this basket.”

The lady chuckled and remarked: “Oh, oh, that’s great.”
