Akpabio highlighted Morocco’s growing role as an investment hub and a reliable partner for Nigeria. He noted that the North African country has become an attractive destination for Nigerian businesses, fostering opportunities for economic collaboration. “Morocco is increasingly becoming a great economic partner to Nigeria. Our people are looking to do business there, and we, in turn, welcome Moroccan investors into our economy,” he stated.

To further solidify the relationship between the two nations, the Nigerian Parliament has already established a Nigeria-Morocco Parliamentary Friendship Group. This initiative aims to enhance communication and cooperation between the legislative bodies of both countries. Akpabio praised Morocco’s increasing investments in Nigeria, particularly pointing out the $1.5 billion fertilizer project located in Akwa Ibom State, which he described as a game-changer. “That single investment is not only commendable but a game-changer. It will create jobs, boost agriculture, and strengthen our bilateral economic relations,” he said.

The Senate President also expressed optimism about expanding collaborations in the oil and gas sector, especially in light of the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline Project. He revealed that recent technical challenges related to the River Niger crossing had been resolved, allowing the project to move forward. “I was glad to learn from the Group CEO of NNPC Limited that the pipeline project is now progressing after overcoming initial hurdles. This will enhance Nigeria’s capacity to export its vast gas reserves in partnership with Morocco,” he added.

Ambassador Tagma, who was accompanied by the Deputy Head of Mission, Marouan Abousif, thanked the Senate President for the warm reception and acknowledged the importance of strengthening ties between two of Africa’s leading nations. He extended a formal invitation to the Nigerian Parliament to visit Morocco, emphasizing that such exchanges would help consolidate political and economic relations between the two countries.

The discussions underscored the potential for increased cooperation across various sectors, including agriculture, energy, and trade. Both sides recognized the value of leveraging their respective strengths to drive sustainable development and mutual prosperity.

Key Areas of Collaboration

  • Energy Sector: The Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline Project represents a significant step towards enhancing energy cooperation and resource utilization.
