Aviation Enthusiasts Gather in Wausau for Annual AirVenture Cup Race
Aviation lovers in central Wisconsin have a unique opportunity to witness the 27th annual EAA AirVenture Cup aircraft race, along with a variety of aviation-related events, from July 18 to July 20 at the Wausau Downtown Airport, located at 725 Woods Place. This event not only showcases the excitement of air racing but also serves as a prelude to the larger EAA AirVenture celebration held annually in Oshkosh.
The race features approximately 100 distinct aircraft that will embark on a challenging course spanning over 400 miles. The route begins in Wausau and travels through nine airports in northeast Wisconsin before extending into Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The final destination is Merrill, with a return to Wausau marking the conclusion of the race. This event has become a staple in the aviation community, drawing participants from across the country.
The EAA AirVenture Cup has a rich history, dating back to its inaugural run in 1998. Initially, the race started in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, and concluded in Oshkosh. Since 2015, the finish line has been set in either Wausau or Merrill, highlighting the region’s growing significance in the aviation world.
Pilots and their aircraft are expected to arrive at the airport in the afternoon of July 18, bringing with them a sense of anticipation and excitement. On July 19, the Wausau Flying Service will host a free airport open house from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This event offers attendees the chance to explore the race pit, inspect the race planes, and engage with participating pilots. It also provides an educational opportunity to learn more about the airport and the broader world of aviation.
The race itself will commence at 9 a.m. on July 20, with spectators expecting to see planes returning from the 400-mile loop at around 11 a.m. For those looking to start their day early, a pancake breakfast will be available from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday and from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, organized by a local Kiwanis club.
EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh is widely recognized as “The World’s Greatest Aviation Celebration.” It also functions as the Experimental Aircraft Association’s annual membership convention, drawing thousands of aviation enthusiasts each year. More information about the event and the organization can be found on their official website.
For those interested in other local events, there are several activities planned throughout the summer in the Wausau area. From Fourth of July fireworks and parades to various community gatherings, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
