“Added Stress”: Revitalization Project Hurts Local Italian Eatery

Challenges Faced by Sgt. Peffer’s During Saddle Creek Road Closure

The streets leading to Sgt. Peffer’s, a well-known local restaurant, have been under construction for several weeks, causing inconvenience for both customers and staff. On Wednesday, the section of Saddle Creek Road that serves as the main access point to the family-owned Italian eatery was completely closed. This has added another layer of difficulty for the business, which is located in the Saddle Creek business district.

The city recently announced plans to revitalize the Saddle Creek neighborhood, and the revitalization project is now in full swing. The closure of Saddle Creek Road has had a significant impact on the operations of Sgt. Peffer’s. Owner Dana Peffer shared her concerns about the challenges posed by the construction.

“We knew it was coming. I didn’t exactly sign up for it, but I don’t have a choice, so I just have to embrace it,” Peffer said. She emphasized that the closure has made it harder for customers to find their way to the restaurant and for employees to navigate parking options.

Peffer mentioned that her employees have been parking at QT and walking to the restaurant, which adds to the stress of daily operations. She also pointed out that communication regarding the construction has been lacking, which has made the situation more difficult, especially since she is a new owner of the restaurant.

“I just bought the restaurant from my dad. I was 3 years old when my dad opened this restaurant,” Peffer said. Despite the challenges, she expressed gratitude for the support from customers. “I can’t thank them enough for supporting local. I don’t know what the impact will be over the next few months with this being closed for them. Right now, I haven’t really seen a big impact, but come to me in two months,” she added.

The city has stated that the Saddle Creek Revitalization project is scheduled to be completed this October. Pete Festersen, the City Council representative for District 1, provided a statement regarding the situation.

“Neighborhood business district renovations are intensive in the short term but benefit everyone in the long term. The construction teams will maintain access to every business during the process, and I encourage all residents to continue to support these great local businesses,” Festersen said.

As the construction continues, the impact on local businesses like Sgt. Peffer’s remains a concern. While the city emphasizes the long-term benefits of the project, the immediate effects on small businesses and their customers are evident. The success of the revitalization efforts will depend on how well the community adapts to the changes and continues to support local establishments.

For now, the focus remains on navigating the challenges posed by the construction while maintaining the spirit of community support. As the project progresses, it will be interesting to see how the neighborhood evolves and how local businesses adapt to the new environment.
