Abu Sayed Endures: BRU Honors July Shaheed Day

Commemorating the First Martyr of the Anti-Discrimination Movement

Begum Rokeya University (BRU) in Rangpur is preparing to observe the first martyrdom anniversary of its student Abu Sayed and ‘July Shaheed Day’ on July 16. This event marks a significant moment for the university community, as it honors the memory of a young man who became a symbol of resistance during last year’s anti-discrimination movement.

To ensure the event proceeds without any disruptions, the university has implemented strict security measures. From Sunday evening until the morning of July 16, the campus will be closed to all outsiders. Only students, faculty members, officials, and staff with valid ID cards will be permitted to enter. This decision was made to maintain order and prevent any potential breaches of discipline during the commemoration.

A notice issued by the university emphasized that no external visitors will be allowed on campus from 7pm on Sunday until 9am on Wednesday. The institution has requested full cooperation from all stakeholders to ensure these restrictions are effectively enforced. In addition, additional police personnel have been deployed to provide further security during this period.

Ferdous Rahman, the BRU Proctor, explained that the decision was taken to protect dignitaries expected to attend the event and to ensure a safe environment for all participants. He also mentioned that special arrangements have been made for first-year students who have not yet received their ID cards. Department heads have been instructed to assist them in obtaining temporary IDs from the Proctor’s Office.

On July 16, the university will hold a series of day-long events to honor Abu Sayed. His father, Mokbul Hossain, will serve as the chief guest at the main ceremony. The event will also feature the participation of four government advisers: Law Adviser Prof Dr Asif Nazrul, Education Adviser Prof Dr Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar, Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan, and Liberation War Affairs Adviser Faruk-E-Azam.

Other notable attendees include University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof Dr SMA Faiz, Education Ministry Senior Secretary Siddique Zobair, and UGC Member Prof Dr Tanzimuddin Khan. According to BRU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md Showkat Ali, 21 family members of martyrs will also be present at the event.

The university leadership has stressed the importance of maintaining a secure and orderly environment throughout the commemoration. With the participation of high-ranking officials and the families of other martyrs, the event is expected to draw significant attention and reflect the deep respect the community holds for those who lost their lives in the struggle for justice and equality.

As the anniversary approaches, the focus remains on honoring the legacy of Abu Sayed while ensuring the safety and dignity of all attendees. The event serves as a reminder of the ongoing commitment to upholding values of justice, discipline, and unity within the academic community.
