A Global Effort for Local Impact: AbbVie’s Week of Possibilities in Asia
Every year, employees from across the globe come together under the umbrella of the Week of Possibilities (WOP), an annual volunteering initiative by the AbbVie Foundation. This event, held in June and July, unites teams from various countries to support local communities through a range of impactful activities.
In 2024, over 880 employees from Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, India, the Taiwan region, and South Korea participated in this global effort. Their contributions were tailored to address specific community needs, with a focus on supporting vulnerable groups, children, seniors, and individuals facing health and social challenges.
Commitment to Community and Equity
Peggy Wu, Vice President, Asia, AbbVie, emphasized the importance of these efforts, stating that “our people power the change we want to see in the world.” She highlighted the company’s dedication to supporting communities that are often overlooked, whether through helping children, seniors, people with disabilities, or protecting the environment. According to Wu, every act of service brings the world closer to a more equitable and healthier future.
Across different regions, the WOP initiatives took on unique forms, reflecting the diverse needs of each community. In Thailand, employees worked to improve conditions in rural schools by rebuilding unsafe classrooms, providing meals, and donating essential supplies. In the Philippines, volunteers focused on food rescue efforts, preparing meals for those in need and organizing events to raise awareness about food security and sustainability.
Diverse Activities Across Asia
The India team engaged in a month-long series of activities, including organizing a sports day for homeless children in Mumbai, visiting senior homes for musical games and companionship, conducting art-based environmental workshops in Bangalore, and hosting hygiene sessions at a children’s home in Delhi.
In the Taiwan region and Malaysia, inclusive events such as stage performances, craft-making, and cycling activities provided confidence-building experiences for individuals with disabilities. Meanwhile, in South Korea, employees supported people with disabilities through community outings, pop art portraits, and eco-friendly installations at care facilities.
In Singapore, volunteers focused on fostering social connections with seniors and vulnerable individuals through creative activities and heritage tours. They also contributed to environmental sustainability by participating in waterways clean-up efforts.
Recognizing the Impact of Volunteers
Li Shu Yu, a staff member from the Eden Social Welfare Foundation in Taiwan, praised the efforts of AbbVie volunteers, saying, “We are deeply impressed by their passion and dedication.” He noted that the companionship provided by the volunteers not only encourages individuals with disabilities but also fosters respect and acceptance within the community.
Expanding the Reach of Health Equity
The WOP initiatives in Asia covered a wide range of areas, including healthcare, education, elderly support, environmental protection, and disability inclusion. These efforts reflect the diverse needs of communities and highlight AbbVie’s commitment to making a meaningful difference.
Claire Chin, Area Head, Regulatory Affairs, AbbVie, shared her personal connection to the event, emphasizing that “health equity starts with local action.” She pointed out that in developed countries like Singapore, people often take basic necessities such as clean environments and good hygiene for granted. For Chin, the first step toward a healthier living environment is addressing these fundamental needs before moving on to advanced technologies and treatments.
A Legacy of Giving Back
Since its launch in 2014, the Week of Possibilities has become a cornerstone of AbbVie’s global culture. The initiative, powered by the AbbVie Foundation, encourages employees worldwide to engage in voluntary actions and make a positive impact in their communities.
Through these efforts, AbbVie continues to demonstrate its commitment to improving lives and driving transformative change. The company’s ongoing work is documented in its 2024 ESG Action Report, which highlights its dedication to local communities and sustainable development.
