Dr. Olga Bunimovich, a practicing dermatologist and assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh, expressed concern about these routines. She noted that the multistep processes that have inspired people to spend a lot of time on their showers can lead to skin damage and environmental issues. According to experts, most of these practices are unnecessary.

The Importance of Skin as a Barrier

Your skin serves as a crucial barrier against external elements. Dr. Nicole Negbenebor, a dermatologic surgeon at University of Iowa Health Care, emphasized that your skin is one of the largest barriers you have. It protects you from the natural elements, so it’s important to treat it properly. However, she also warned that sometimes too much of a good thing can be harmful.

A basic shower doesn’t need to involve 10 steps or an array of products. A simple routine with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free, hypoallergenic cleanser followed by hydration with lotion or oil should suffice. It’s important not to stay in the shower for too long or use excessively hot water, as this can strip your skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation.

Choosing the Right Products

When it comes to soaps, it’s best to use ones designed for sensitive skin. While antibacterial soaps are popular, they can be too drying for daily use. However, they might be beneficial for individuals with certain conditions like hidradenitis suppurativa, which causes painful boils and abscesses on the skin.

Oils can be helpful for your skin after you’ve dried off, as they act as a sealant to lock in moisture. However, it’s important to note that oils are not moisturizers themselves; they help retain the moisture that water provides.

Dr. Lisa Akintilo, a dermatologist at NYU Langone Health, highlighted the importance of combining cleansing with hydration in skincare routines. Many people miss this aspect, making it essential to include both steps in your routine.

The Myth of Double Cleansing

Some influencers suggest that a complete skincare routine must include exfoliation and what is known as double cleansing. This practice typically involves using an oil-based cleanser to remove makeup and excess oil, followed by a water-based cleanser to eliminate any remaining residue. However, experts advise against bringing this method to full-body skincare.

Dr. Bunimovich pointed out that people often overuse soap, and she recommends washing only specific areas like the private parts and skin folds. She believes that double cleansing is unnecessary for the entire body.

Exfoliating with Caution

Exfoliation is meant to remove dead skin cells and can be beneficial for your skin. However, doing it daily can cause problems, especially if you have dry skin or conditions like eczema or acne. Manual exfoliation using body scrubs or rough loofahs should be done sparingly to avoid irritation.

If you notice rashes after exfoliating, it may be a sign that you’re overdoing it. A gentler alternative is to use products containing lactic or glycolic acid, but even these should be used occasionally.

Showers account for nearly 17% of Americans’ indoor water use, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. With many states facing drought conditions, there is a growing emphasis on water conservation efforts, including taking shorter showers.

To maintain cleanliness while preserving your skin’s natural oils, a lukewarm shower that allows enough time to clean your body should be sufficient in most cases. By reducing shower time and using water wisely, you can contribute to environmental sustainability while still keeping your skin healthy.
