A Glimpse at Bentley’s First All-Electric Production Car

A New Vision for Bentley’s Future

Bentley has unveiled a bold and innovative concept that signals a significant shift in its design philosophy. The EXP 15, described as a “design vision concept,” offers a glimpse into the future of the brand’s first full-electric production car. This vehicle is set to be officially introduced next year, marking a pivotal moment in Bentley’s evolution.

The EXP 15 draws inspiration from the iconic 1930s three-seater Speed Six, known as the ‘Blue Train.’ This historical influence is evident in the car’s design, which accommodates three passengers and includes accessible storage for additional luggage. One of the unique features of the EXP 15 is its boot, which can be transformed into a space for outdoor picnics, adding versatility to the vehicle’s functionality.

In terms of design, the EXP 15 features an unusual number of doors—only one on the driver’s side and two “coach” doors on the passenger side. This configuration not only adds a distinctive aesthetic but also enhances accessibility for passengers.

Inside the EXP 15, Bentley has made a deliberate effort to blend physical switches with digital readouts, creating a harmonious balance between traditional craftsmanship and modern technology. Many of the interior components are finished with a 100% wool textile sourced from UK-based Fox Brothers, emphasizing the brand’s commitment to quality and sustainability.

Robin Page, Bentley’s director of design, shared his insights on the significance of the EXP 15. He stated, “The beauty of a concept car is not just to position our new design language, but to test where the market’s going.” According to Page, the SUV segment is growing rapidly, and Bentley understands the GT market through its four generations of the Continental GT. However, the sedan segment presents a unique challenge as it continues to evolve.

“Some customers want a classic ‘three-box’ sedan shape, others a ‘one-box’ design, and others again something more elevated. So this was a chance for us to talk to people and get a feeling,” Page explained. This approach highlights Bentley’s commitment to understanding customer preferences and adapting to changing market trends.

The exterior of the EXP 15 is dominated by a long, sweeping bonnet, which is complemented by a new ‘Iconic Grille’ that incorporates lighting for a more striking appearance at night. Beneath the bonnet lies additional storage space, accessible via piano-style hinged engine covers. This feature not only enhances the car’s practicality but also showcases Bentley’s attention to detail.

While the EXP 15 concept is not intended for production, it serves as a crucial platform for Bentley to explore and communicate its vision for the future of electric vehicles. By presenting this concept, Bentley aims to engage with potential customers and gather valuable feedback that will inform the development of its upcoming electric models.

The EXP 15 represents a bold step forward for Bentley, blending heritage with innovation. It reflects the brand’s dedication to maintaining its legacy while embracing the challenges and opportunities of the electric vehicle market. As the automotive industry continues to evolve, concepts like the EXP 15 play a vital role in shaping the future of luxury motoring.
