A Flying Saucer on Wheels Heads to Auction
  • Nicknamed the Ice Princess XF58, this six-wheeled machine combines vintage style with a touch of nonsense.

  • Mecum Auctions plans to auction the unique vehicle in September, with no estimated price provided.

Among the most unique custom vehicles ever constructed, very few capture attention as effectively as this one. Called the Ice Princess XF58, this bizarre six-wheeled masterpiece appears to have driven straight out ofThe Jetsons, yet it is very much a real, operational device.

Built using a combination of Studebaker andCadillaccomponents, the XF58 first attracted ourattention five years ago, and now it’s scheduled to go up for sale in September. If the typical 1950s classic seems a bit too formal, the Ice Princess could be the unexpected choice you’re seeking.

Designed for the diverse car enthusiast Larry Klairmont, the XF58 was constructed by Richard Fletcher and features four wheels in the front and two at the back. The front section includes a classicStudebakernose featuring a circular grille that somewhat resembles the rear of a jet engine. With two small air vents carved into the front bumper and four round headlights, the Ice Princess’s front has an eerie similarity to the face of Sid fromIce Age.

Vintage Design Featuring a Science Fiction Element

A sophisticated two-tone blue paint design covers the body. And, just like the flying car used inThe Jetsons, the XF58 features a full glass cockpit, designed in a modern-style double-bubble configuration. The back is equally unique, with big fins and tail lights that extend from the body.

Beneath the quirky exterior, the XF58 boasts impressive specifications. It is powered by a naturally aspirated 8.2-liter V8 engine, combined with an automatic transmission. Mecum Auctions, which is overseeing the sale, has not released information on the vehicle’s mileage, although it’s probable that the car has been driven very little.

Flashy Inside and Out

The performance remains impressive indoors, as the interior of the Ice Princess is equally impressive as its exterior. The seats and door panels feature shiny gold fabric, while the carpets are adorned in vibrant red. The sparsely-designed steering wheel combines white and gold details, and five circular instruments, coated in chrome, enhance the high-tech appearance.

It’s challenging to ascertain the potential selling price of the car, considering there is noother Studebakerlike this. However, if there is someone who truly desires it, they are likely to be willing to pay a significant amount.

Whether you’re interested in unconventional engineering or simply want a vehicle that appears it could travel through time, the Ice Princess is worth examining more closely. While it may not take you to space, it will certainly draw attention. View the complete listing.here and see for yourself.
