Sri Lanka, May 29 — Revered preacher Venerable Bandarawela Amithananda Thero, who was deeply cherished in Sri Lanka, breathed his last today (29) while undergoing medical care at the Colombo National Hospital. The news has affected the country’s tourism sector.

The Thero had been fighting an ailment for quite some time and was receiving prolonged treatment at the medical facility.

An immensely impactful spiritual leader, Ven. Amithananda Thero established the Delgoda Youth Center for Dhamma, dedicating himself to steering the nation’s young people toward the principles of Buddhism and ethical conduct throughout his lifetime.

He gained widespread recognition across the nation thanks to his influential sermons broadcasted on TV and radio, making him a familiar figure within Sri Lankan Buddhist communities. Additionally, he guided numerous monks whose inspiration stemmed from his lessons and dedication to religious instruction.
