By Solomon Gumah

Tamale, May 28, GNA – An initiative aimed at advancing girls’ education by fostering an improved adaptable environment and peaceful atmosphere for learning at Nanton D/A Girls Model Junior High School in the Northern Region was officially inaugurated.

This year-long initiative employs UNICEF’s Safe Schools Model with the aim of upgrading the educational setting. It does so by supplying classroom furnishings designed to boost both the comfort and security of female students at the institution.

Titled “Empower Her – Empowering Girls through Education, Vocational Training, and Sustainable Resources,” this program is being executed by the Learners Girls Foundation, an NGO, thanks to financial backing from the KGL Foundation.

The event drew important players from the educational field, such as participants from non-governmental organizations and the school that would benefit from this initiative.

In addition to enhancing infrastructure, the initiative will feature a mentoring program complete with workshops aimed at assisting students in areas such as entrepreneurship, STEM fields, and career growth. It also seeks to familiarize participants with critical thinking, innovation, and business administration techniques.

Miss Azara Sulemana, who leads the Empower Her initiative at the Learners Girls Foundation, spoke during the launch event in Tamale about how this project will include community interactions aimed at increasing awareness and encouraging more female enrollments as well as keeping them enrolled in schools.

She stated, “The initiative aims to boost girls’ enrollment and retention through classroom workshops and stakeholder involvement. It also focuses on shaping their mindset towards careers and entrepreneurship. This approach not only fosters academic achievement but also aids in decreasing unemployment and alleviating poverty within local communities.”

She remained optimistic that by the conclusion of the project, there would be an increase of at least five percent in both the registration and continued attendance of girls within the region.

She similarly praised a team of six students referred to as the Tahama Group, who are presently enrolled in master’s programs at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. She mentioned that their scholarly initiative at the institution resulted in the recognition of the school as a recipient.

Miss Faizetu Sualihu from the Girls Advocacy Network discussed the importance of involving local influencers in backing educational opportunities and professional growth for young women.

She highlighted the importance of breaking down cultural obstacles that prevent girls from achieving empowerment.

She stated, “Backing girls’ education isn’t merely about promoting their rights; it’s the most prudent investment in the comprehensive growth of our societies.”

She urged the stakeholders in the Nanton District to work together and combine their assets to improve girls’ education locally.

Mrs. Janet Adua, the District Director of the Ghana Education Service in Nanton, praised the Learners Girls Foundation and its collaborators for choosing the Nanton D/A Model Junior High School as the site for their initiative.

She committed complete backing from the district for its successful execution.

Several students from the benefiting institution, who were present during the inauguration, showed excitement and readiness to collaborate with school officials to make full use of the chances provided by this program.
