Esports in Vietnam Gains Momentum in Southeast Asia, Says Riot Games Exec (International Edition)

Vietnam is quickly becoming one of Southeast Asia’s most vibrant esports centers, showing substantial development, as reported by Riot Games.

During the Vietnam GameVerse 2025 conference on May 26, Laura Li, who leads the Asia-Pacific eSports division at Riot Games, referred to Vietnam as an emerging powerhouse in the local gaming industry.

Teams like GAM Esports, Team Secret Whales, along with player Crazyguy from RRQ, have regularly participated in significant global events such as the VCT Masters in Toronto and the Vietnam Championship Series (VCS).

Li attributed this achievement to an enthusiastic fanbase, a well-established esports environment, and substantial backing from regional collaborators.

She emphasized VNGGames’ pivotal position in fostering the esports community and maintaining a professional environment consistent with global benchmarks. By orchestrating events such as the VCS and holding the Viewing Party for Worlds 2024, VNGGames has demonstrated its capability to bring together various groups and create significant influence.

Li stated, “Not only does VNG comprehend the local market, but it also aligns with Riot Games’ shared vision and long-term dedication to fostering a sustainable esports ecosystem in Vietnam.”

At the Vietnam GameVerse 2025 event, Li discussed the swift development of esports, transforming it from mere amusement into a significant global cultural and economic phenomenon. This industry now generates considerable revenue and draws an audience of over hundreds of millions globally.

The 2024 League of Legends World Championship final between T1 and BLG attracted 50 million global online views, with an average minute audience (AMA) of 33 million.

The viewing party series organized by VNGGames during Worlds 2024 attracted tens of thousands of participants in-person and more than 1.1 million online spectators across the country. The VCS, jointly hosted with Riot Games and VNGGames, regularly garners over one million online viewers each season.

Riot Games highlighted the significance of forming local alliances to boost income, foster communities, and maintain international benchmarks. According to a spokesperson from the firm, “Our approach isn’t merely translating our offerings; rather, we aim to grasp local cultures, gain community confidence, and commit to sustained investment.”

In addition to fostering community involvement, esports has become a significant economic catalyst. In 2022, the World Championship contributed over $53 million to the local economy of the host city, with projections suggesting that the event in 2024 could add another €12 million ($16 million) to London’s economy. Last year, the Valorant Champions Tour (VCT) distributed more than $78.4 million through prize money and sales of digital goods among competing teams.

The expansion of esports in Vietnam benefits from an enthusiastic community, governmental support, and efforts towards professionalism by domestic entities. Organizations such as ON Live Esports (part of VTVCab) along with the Vietnam Recreational and Electronic Sports Association (VIRESA) are instrumental in developing a well-structured esports environment. This development not only brings the sector closer to fans but also elevates operational benchmarks within the industry.

“Ideally, sustainable growth of esports requires cooperation among the government, companies, and communities. With solid groundwork laid out,Vietnam holds great potential to emerge as a prominent regional—and ultimately international—esports center,” stated the Riot Games representative during Vietnam GameVerse 2025.
