Individuals involved in the discussion hosted by the Youth Leadership Development Programme of LEAP Africa have urged Nigerian young people to question the current situation.
Conveying a message of goodwill, the Chairman of the Bauchi State Network of Civil Society Organisations, Jinjiri Garba, stated that the initiative arrived at an appropriate moment, adding, “We must shift the perception. Young people are more capable of assuming leadership positions, as there is a growing demand for this.”
He argued that Nigerian young people possess the necessary knowledge and vigor to drive the nation ahead.

Speaking about the participants’ speeches during the debate, Jinjiri stated, “It is a well-known fact that Nigerians are gifted individuals. If you go to any African nation or Europe, you will find Nigerians performing exceptionally well. However, I am unsure why it is different within our own country.”
I am impressed by all the participants, particularly the women. Women are now coming forward to express their views. In the past, they tended to limit themselves. They were reserved. However, with the current level of involvement, I observe women gaining confidence. I am truly impressed.
From her perspective, Ijeoma Kalu, the program’s coordinator at LEAP Africa and also the leader of the Youth Leadership Development Programme, stated that the competition was held as part of an initiative by the Nigerian Youth Futures Fund.
She stated, “This is a program aimed at enhancing the leadership skills of young individuals.”
Today, we observed the Northeast-Northwest regional quarterfinals of the Youth Leadership Debates. The debate is part of the Youth Leadership Development Programme, which aims to educate young individuals not only to discuss policy topics but also to participate in dialogues, carry out research, and present well-informed perspectives grounded in data and statistics regarding policies that affect us.
We met with representatives from different ministries and agencies who came to support us today and to hear the students. After all, this is meant to be a forum for discussion between young people and decision-makers – where the youth present suggestions on national policy issues.
As per Ijeoma, other parts of the country are also participating, followed by a national final.
She mentioned that the winners “will take home some very exciting prizes that will also assist them in initiating advocacy campaigns within their communities.”
