DUBOIS, Pa. (WTAJ) – Following the decision made by the Penn State Board of Trustees to shut down seven satellite campuses, which includes Dubois, multiple state representatives have expressed their worries over this move.
“It’s discouraging to witness their withdrawal, leaving rural Pennsylvania in a difficult situation. Therefore, we will address the challenges that arise from this,” stated Senator Wayne Langerholc.
During our conversation with a donor at the Penn State DuBois campus back in May, they voiced concerns regarding the structures they have contributed funds toward. Langerholc mentioned that efforts are underway to develop a strategy ensuring these buildings remain occupied rather than sitting empty.
“We’ve been engaged in discussions and will keep talking with any organization that values rural Pennsylvania, particularly in Clearfield County, and wishes to make an investment. I believe that those who decide to invest here will discover that our area boasts remarkable individuals with exceptional work ethics, substantial knowledge, and tremendous determination,” stated Langerholc.
Senator Langerholc likewise voiced worries over another action potentially detrimental to rural areas: the state’s proposal to shut down Quehanna Bootcamp and SCI Rockview. Nevertheless, he continues to stay hopeful.
“We will confront these challenges directly, and I am confident that we will manage to address them effectively. We will definitely face these challenges head-on,” Langerholc added.
The seven Penn State branch campuses will shut down following the spring 2027 term, pending approval from both the Department of Education and Governor Josh Shapiro, who appears to back the closures. In public statements, he has expressed trust in the university leaders behind this choice.
