Rooster Reign: Roaming Rulers of Miami’s Streets

Previously found mainly in backyard coops, chickens have become a familiar presence in areas such as Little Havana and can be seen even near the city center’s modern skyscrapers and governmental complexes.

Although some residents grumble about the morning songfest, many have welcomed the birds as unofficial symbols of the area.

In 2002, Little Havana solidified the rooster’s status with a series of large, vibrantly colored statues lining Calle Ocho.

Over twenty years since their creation, many of the vibrantly colored statues, crafted by the renowned artist Pedro Damián who has passed away, still draw visitors looking for enjoyable photo ops.
