Singapore’s Beloved 1939 Restaurant Set to Close by Late Month

In May 31, the multifaceted dining venue and bar known as 1939 Singapore situated on Keong Saik Road will close down permanently. This closure further contributes to the increasing number of restaurants shutting their doors in the planet’s second priciest metropolis.

“Since 1939, this place has transcended being just a bar, kitchen, or rooftop. It has become a canvas for cherished memories, a spot for devouring burgers, a stage for clinking cocktails, and an unforgettable backdrop for many evenings—thanks to all of you,” the establishment shared in a goodbye post on Instagram.

The venue is inviting guests to come and experience its countdown to the last day, stating: “Thanks for being a part of our journey. Together, let’s make this final month unforgettable.”

Launched in November of last year, 1939 assumed the location formerly held by Potato Head Singapore at 36 Keong Saik Road. This establishment comprises four distinctive zones: Three Buns on the first floor, The Restaurant situated on the second level, Studio 1939 cocktail lounge located on the third floor, and finally, The Rooftop Bar atop the building.

In recent times, Singapore’s renowned culinary landscape has experienced an influx of closures impacting venues ranging from affordable hawker centers to high-end eateries awarded by the Michelin guide.

Increasing operational expenses along with decreasing customer expenditure have been pointed out as major elements, as reported.

According to last year’s Cost of Living Survey by American consultancy firm Mercer, Singapore ranked as the second most costly city globally for expatriates following Hong Kong.
