Thailand Cracks Down on Airlines for Delays and Cancellations

Thailand is making airlines responsible for delays and cancellations by introducing several new rules that mandate compensation for international passengers.

According to regulations set forth by the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand, travelers on international flights that experience delays exceeding two hours have the right to receive complimentary meals and drinks proportionate to their wait time. Additionally, they are allowed unrestricted use of telephones and internet services at no cost.
Bangkok Post
newspaper reported.

In cases where delays last more than five hours, airlines are required to offer compensation of no less than 1,500 baht (approximately US$46). This compensation may come in various forms such as cash, credits, travel vouchers, frequent flyer points, or similar alternatives, and should be provided within 14 days.

In cases where an overnight stay is needed, they must provide passengers with lodging and transportation, along with the choice to cancel their journey for a complete reimbursement.

Passengers facing delays exceeding 10 hours can receive increased compensation ranging from 2,000 to 4,500 baht based on the flight’s length.

If flights get canceled, airlines have to offer the same level of assistance they provide when delays last over 10 hours.

However, these regulations do not apply if the airline informs travelers at least seven days ahead or fewer than seven days in advance along with offering an alternate flight that departs within three hours of the initial departure time, or when cancellations result from extraordinary and inevitable situations even after the carrier has taken suitable precautions.
