Trump Backtracks on Tariffs After Markets Plunge Following Threats to Tax Key Allies

Donald Trump
has retreated from his threat to expedite the imposition of a 50 percent tariff on imports from the
European Union
Following a ‘really pleasant conversation.’

Rather than sticking to the original schedule, he has decided to prolong the deadline for trade discussions until July 9 following comments from the leader of the European Commission who stated that additional time was necessary to ‘secure a favorable agreement.’

President Trump disclosed on Truth Social his request for an extension regarding the June 1st deadline on the 50% tariff concerning trade with the European Union.

I consented to the extension — July 9, 2025.

It was an honor for me to be involved. The Commission President mentioned that negotiations will commence swiftly. I appreciate your focus on this issue.

On Friday, Trump warned of escalating the trade conflict as he voiced dissatisfaction with the pace at which negotiations were progressing, stating that he aimed for significant additional tariffs to kick in starting June 1st. This announcement sent shockwaves through international financial markets.

However, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen informed him that the EU required additional time to reach a consensus and requested him to postpone the tariffs until July, which was the deadline he initially established when announcing the new tariffs in April.

On Sunday, Trump informed journalists that von der Leyen promised to “quickly convene to assess whether we can reach an agreement.”

von der Leyen stated in a social media posting that the EU was prepared to expedite trade discussions, characterizing the ‘positive’ telephone conversation with Trump as fruitful.
