OSHKOSH (WLUK) — Located north of the EAA Museum, near the northern runway, stands the Charles W. Harris Youth Aviation Center.
Inside a structure that looks like an airplane hangar, there is an aircraft present. Children aged six to twelve who are at AirVenture gain knowledge about airplane structures and flight controls.
Children have the opportunity to join educational initiatives, gaining knowledge about aircraft design, their role in history, and their influence on the economy.
“Many years ago, they launched a children’s workshop here. It began in the hangar, but as it grew, they moved to a tent and conducted hands-on projects with kids, as such activities are rare in schools nowadays,” said Sue Hutson, co-chairman of the youth aviation center.
Last year was the inaugural year that this youth center participated in EAA AirVenture. The financial support is provided by volunteers and the Charles W. Harris Foundation.

We truly believe in giving back to children. We are very passionate about mentorship,” said Hutson regarding fostering a love for aviation in the younger generation. “Let’s face it, who will purchase these amazing old aircraft? Who will look after them?
One of the youth center’s initiatives includes distributing rubber ducks that resemble pilots, which children can then put on their preferred aircraft.
“That has been quite enjoyable since we want [the children] to communicate with the pilots,” Hutson stated.
The youth center also provides a photo scavenger hunt. To date, they have organized two teen nights, along with an event for kids with disabilities.
