MONROE, La. (KNOE) – The Miracles to Milestones Organization is striving to create accessible playgrounds for kids throughout the area, and they’re achieving this by selling lemonade.
Local eateries near the Twin Cities are supporting this year’s charity event. James E. Simpson, co-owner of Flying Tiger Brewing and Pizza Bar, mentions it’s a privilege to assist this foundation.
He states, “I’ve gained a lot of knowledge about fully accessible playgrounds. That’s something I hadn’t encountered before, and I wasn’t aware it was a concern. So, when Hillary [Miracles to Milestones Founder] called, I was always ready to offer my support.”
Although lemonade helps combat the heat, it is more than just a tasty snack. Hillary Sirmon, founder of Miracles to Milestones, stated that inclusive playgrounds are essential for children.
She states, “Inclusive playgrounds are crucial for children of all abilities to come together. I mean, kids with physical disabilities can learn from those who are fully able, and vice versa, as the fully able kids can also gain many skills from their peers with disabilities. Therefore, it’s significant not only for children but also for adults, as it provides an opportunity for everyone to play together and ensures that children have equal rights on the playground.”
For Hillary, witnessing children with disabilities enjoying playtime alongside their peers holds deep personal significance. Her son, Benjamin, was born with a rare genetic condition. Each playground that Miracles to Milestones has constructed has been dedicated to his memory.
