They could be just seven months into a 10-year agreement, but WWE have already made a significant impression on Nextflix’s top executives.
The former New York-based territory initiated a 10-year, $5 billion agreement with the streaming giant this year, transferring its flagship show Monday Night Raw to the platform. Beyond the United States, all WWE content was moved to Netflix, including Premium Live Events and the company’s archive of PLEs and weekly television episodes (regrettably, older WCW, ECW, and territory shows were not included in the transition).
So far, Netflix’s management is very pleased with their investment, which might eventually be expanded into a 20-year agreement in the future (the streaming company also has the option to terminate the deal after five years).
Speaking to Joe Otterson of Variety, Netflix’s Vice President of Sports Gabe Spitzer commented on WWE’s performance to date, “It’s exceeded our expectations and more. We understood from the beginning that we wouldn’t alter WWE. Instead, the focus was on how we could enhance it in subtle ways, and that’s what we’ve witnessed so far.”
[WWE’s] distribution has been quite scattered so far, and the idea was ‘Let’s merge the strengths of what you do with the strengths of what we do through our worldwide distribution, and bring our marketing teams together … and try to elevate this,
Netflix’s initial original WWE content will launch later this month with WWE Unreal –a five-part documentary series that reveals the inner workings of WWE’s creative team– makes its debut on the service.
