Over 160 Dogs Rescued from Puppy Mill, Recovering in Michigan

Over 165 dogs, taken from a suspected puppy mill in another state, are currently on the path to healing—some of them located right here in Michigan.

The dogs were taken out of a puppy mill by the National Mill Dog Rescue following a USDA investigation that revealed terrible conditions. As reported by rescue workers, the animals experienced neglect, living without medical attention, dealing with infections, losing limbs, and having severe matted fur.

“Some of the dogs had limbs that actually fell off due to decay. They were continuously bred without any regard for their well-being,” said Kim Alboum, Director of Field Operations for BISSELL Pet Foundation.

The BISSELL Pet Foundation provided funding for the transportation and arranged placement for each dog with reliable shelter partners throughout the country. Over 50 of the rescued animals were taken to Michigan, where they are getting medical treatment and getting ready to be adopted.

“These canines have endured unimaginable circumstances. Now, they are secure, recovering, and for the first time—will have a genuine opportunity for a caring family,” Alboum stated.

Album, who has been involved in animal welfare for almost 20 years, states that this is not a rare occurrence. She has personally toured around 30 puppy mills and assisted in organizing transfers for many more.

People spot a adorable puppy online without realizing the mother is still confined in a cage, going hungry and enduring pain,” she stated. “That’s why we consistently recommend adopting from a nearby shelter—or, if you’re purchasing, to visit the breeder in person and request to see the entire facility.

Michigan shelters are currently at maximum capacity, and the BISSELL Pet Foundation is urging the public to help—through adoption, fostering, or volunteering. Alboum notes that summer is particularly challenging for shelters, as the number of animals coming in increases while adoptions usually decrease.

Every bit of assistance is significant,” Alboum stated. “There are remarkable animals in your area looking for families.
