The Western Conference has experienced major changes during the 2025 NBA offseason, but the situation in Los Angeles has been even more dramatic. Both the Los Angeles Lakers and the LA Clippers were eliminated in the first round of this year’s playoffs, yet they are each planning to be more competitive next season.
The Lakers and Clippers have both brought in significant new players in the last week. The Lakers added former Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart, while the Clippers acquired three-time All-Star Bradley Beal, and both star guards are anticipated to have a major influence on their teams.

Numerous NBA fans and media members have commended the Clippers for executing the top offseason of any team in the league, particularly following the acquisition of Beal, but the Lakers’ signing of Smart is equally impressive. Although both moves are expected to have significant effects, former New Orleans Pelicans center and 14-year NBA veteran Kendrick Perkins expressed his opinion on which move is superior.
“Marcus Smart is going to have a greater influence on the Lakers than Bradley Beal will on the Clippers!!!” Perkins shared on X (previously Twitter).
Of course, it’s difficult to determine which decision will have a greater effect, but many would contest what Perkins is claiming. Although Smart is considered one of the top perimeter defenders in the NBA when he’s healthy, the 31-year-old has not been at his best over the last two seasons. Smart has only appeared in 54 games combined during that time, and now the Lakers will be counting on him to provide consistent defensive support.

Despite being past his peak, Beal has shown he remains a valuable player and is leaving a difficult situation with the Phoenix Suns. Once again, both players are expected to have significant influences in Los Angeles, but Beal joining the Clippers is a more certain upgrade.
