Mass. Weather: Heat Advisory Thursday, Dangerous Heat Friday

Heat Advisory Issued for Massachusetts as Temperatures Rise

Massachusetts is preparing for a significant heatwave this week, with forecasters issuing a heat advisory to warn residents about the extreme temperatures expected to hit the state. The advisory will take effect on Thursday at 11 a.m. and remain in place until 8 p.m. on Friday. This alert covers most of Western and Eastern Massachusetts, as well as all of Central Massachusetts.

The National Weather Service has warned that the combination of high temperatures and humidity could lead to heat-related illnesses. Residents are urged to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and seek air-conditioned spaces whenever possible. Additionally, people are encouraged to check on elderly neighbors and relatives who may be more vulnerable during such conditions.

Temperature Projections and Heat Indices

On Thursday, temperatures are expected to hover in the low 90s, but heat indices will make it feel like the mid-90s. For example, Boston is projected to reach 91 degrees Fahrenheit, but it will feel like 92. Worcester is expected to hit 89 degrees, yet it will feel like 92. Springfield, on the other hand, should reach 92 degrees but could feel like 95 due to the humidity.

By Friday, the heat is expected to intensify. Worcester may reach 95 degrees, but it will feel like 101. Boston is anticipated to hit 96 degrees, which could feel like 101. Springfield is expected to have a high of 97, but it might feel like 102. Hartford could experience temperatures that feel like 103, while Lowell may be the hottest spot, with a high of 98 degrees that could feel like 104.

Potential for Severe Thunderstorms

In addition to the rising temperatures, there is also concern about the possibility of severe thunderstorms. Forecasters noted that a cold front moving southward could interact with the hot, humid, and conditionally unstable air, leading to the development of thunderstorms. Some of these storms could become strong or even severe, bringing gusty winds and heavy rainfall that could cause street flooding.

These storms are expected to occur between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Friday. Damaging winds and small hail are possible, and the entire Bay State is currently under a watch for potentially severe weather. However, these forecasts could change as the day progresses.

Weather Outlook for the Weekend

After the intense heat and potential storms on Friday, humidity and temperatures are expected to drop over the weekend. Saturday is likely to be dry, with daytime highs reaching the 80s. Coastal areas may see temperatures in the high 70s or low 80s.

However, unsettled weather is expected to return on Sunday as another storm system moves through the region. There is a chance of afternoon rain or thunderstorms, though forecasters anticipate less instability compared to Friday. Daytime temperatures on Sunday are expected to be similar to those seen on Saturday.

Residents are advised to stay informed about the changing weather conditions and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and comfort throughout the week.
