FSCJ Secures 0K Grant for Skilled Trades Expansion

Florida State College at Jacksonville Receives Significant Grant to Address Skilled Trade Worker Shortage

Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ) has been awarded a two-year Gable Grant from the Lowe’s Foundation. This grant aims to address the growing shortage of skilled trade workers across America. FSCJ is one of 12 community and technical colleges selected to receive this funding, highlighting its commitment to workforce development and education.

The grant, worth $390,000, will be used to support training programs for aspiring electricians, construction professionals, and HVAC technicians. A key focus of the funding is to strengthen communities by improving access to these high-demand careers. The money will also help recruit qualified instructors and provide educational materials, training spaces, and necessary equipment.

Dr. John Avendano, President of FSCJ, emphasized the significance of the grant. “Thanks to the Lowe’s Foundation Gable Grant, FSCJ will transform access to high-demand careers through an innovative construction training initiative called ‘EmpowerEd by Lowe’s,’ which was developed to bring educational and training opportunities directly to those who need it most,” he said. “This program is more than job training and workforce development; it’s an opportunity to restore lives while also strengthening our community both now and far into the future.”

Janice Dupré, Executive Vice President of Human Resources and Chair of the Lowe’s Foundation, shared her perspective on the initiative. “Collectively, we are writing a comeback story for the skilled trades industry,” she said. “Through our Gable Grants network, these schools join a community of innovators helping one another effectively recruit, train and employ the people America needs to revitalize our infrastructure.”

The Gable Grants program, launched in 2023, has already seen the Lowe’s Foundation invest $43 million across 28 states. The foundation has committed to a five-year, $50 million investment to support community and technical colleges in recruiting, training, and preparing 50,000 trade workers in various fields, including carpentry and construction, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and property maintenance.

Key Areas of Focus

  • Training Programs: The grant supports hands-on training for students interested in skilled trades such as electrician, HVAC technician, and construction professional.
  • Instructor Recruitment: Funding helps attract and retain experienced instructors to ensure quality education.
  • Educational Materials and Equipment: The grant provides resources necessary for effective training, including tools and classroom supplies.
  • Community Engagement: By offering training at community sites, the initiative makes education more accessible to local residents.

Impact on Workforce Development

The initiative not only addresses the immediate need for skilled workers but also contributes to long-term economic growth. By equipping individuals with the skills needed for high-demand jobs, FSCJ and its partners are helping to build a stronger, more resilient workforce.

The collaboration between FSCJ and the Lowe’s Foundation demonstrates a shared vision of supporting local communities and fostering economic stability. Through these efforts, the college is playing a vital role in shaping the future of the skilled trades industry.

Future Goals

Looking ahead, the Gable Grants program aims to continue expanding its reach and impact. With a focus on innovation and collaboration, the initiative is positioned to make a lasting difference in the lives of students and the communities they serve.
