Introduction to Postgraduate Programmes at Captain Williamson Sangma State University
Captain Williamson Sangma State University (CWSSU), the first state-run university in Meghalaya, has recently announced the availability of postgraduate programmes for the academic session 2025-26. This initiative marks a significant step forward in the higher education landscape of the region. The university’s Registrar, A Ch Marak, shared details about the courses offered across its Tura and Shillong campuses.
Available Courses at CWSSU
The Tura campus provides a wide range of postgraduate programmes. These include Anthropology, Economics, Education, Environmental Science, Garo, Geography, History, Philosophy, Political Science, and Sociology. Students interested in these subjects can apply through the university’s official channels.
On the other hand, the Shillong campus offers postgraduate courses in Commerce, English, Khasi, and Social Work. Notably, some of these courses are also available at the Tura campus, providing students with multiple options based on their preferences and convenience.
Infrastructure and Recognition of CWSSU
Established in 2011 under an Act of the state government, CWSSU operates from its permanent campus located in Tura. The campus was built with a special plan assistance allocation of Rs 16.96 crore and was completed in December 2022. It spans over 90 acres and includes academic blocks, hostels, and administrative facilities, making it a comprehensive educational hub.
CWSSU is recognized under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956, which allows it to award degrees independently. The University Grants Commission (UGC) formally approved its degree-awarding status in December 2024. This recognition underscores the university’s credibility and commitment to quality education.
Admission Process and Flexibility
One of the key advantages of CWSSU is that admissions to its postgraduate programmes do not require the Common University Entrance Test (CUET). This makes the university an attractive option for students across Meghalaya who may be looking for alternative pathways into higher education.
At least 11 colleges from across the state have been granted affiliation with CWSSU. These affiliated colleges also admit students without requiring CUET, unlike institutions under the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), which must adhere to the CUET requirement as per the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
Important Details for Prospective Students
According to official sources, the admission process for CWSSU’s postgraduate courses will remain open for at least two to three weeks. Students can find detailed information about the application procedures and course offerings on the university’s official website.
Significance of CWSSU in Higher Education
The launch of CWSSU is considered a milestone in Meghalaya’s higher education sector. It enhances access to quality education and offers flexible admission pathways for students. By providing diverse postgraduate programmes and removing the barrier of CUET, the university is setting a new standard for educational opportunities in the region.
