A Life of Passion and Dedication
Tributes have poured in following the sudden passing of Craig Sweetman, a beloved champion cyclist who was cherished by all within the Irish cycling community. At just 52 years old, Craig left behind a legacy that will be remembered for generations to come.
Born in Skerries, Dublin, but later based in Mornington, Meath, Craig lived a life filled with passion, dedication, and an unwavering love for cycling. He worked as an airport policeman, balancing his professional responsibilities with his deep commitment to the sport. Craig was not only a member of Stamullen Road Club in Meath since he was 14 years old, but also a leading figure in the Irish cycling scene.
His family, including his loving wife Gill, sons Toby and Tyler, parents Tony and Mona, brothers Jeff and Dale, sister Kadie, and many extended relatives, are grieving the loss of a devoted husband, father, and brother. His passing has also deeply affected colleagues at the Dublin Airport Fire and Rescue Service, where he served for over 25 years.
A Career Full of Triumphs
Craig’s career in cycling spanned over three decades, during which he competed in numerous events both in Ireland and abroad. He made more than 11 appearances in Rás Tailteann, one of the most prestigious international cycling stage races in Ireland. Throughout his career, he achieved remarkable success, winning several key races such as the 2006 Leinster Road Race Championships, the Brendan Carroll Memorial, and the Ballivor Grand Prix.
He represented Ireland on multiple occasions and continued to compete at a high level well into his 50s. Just recently, he was crowned a national masters champion, proving that age was never a barrier when it came to his passion for the sport.
A Family Legacy
Craig’s son, Toby, has followed in his father’s footsteps, becoming one of the rising stars in the Irish cycling scene. The family celebrated last week when Toby secured a stunning stage win at the Junior Tour of Ireland while riding for the Irish Team. This achievement was a source of immense pride for Craig, who had been actively involved in training and supporting his son’s development.
The connection between father and son is a testament to the enduring spirit of the Sweetman family. As one mourner noted, “the apple didn’t fall far from the tree,” highlighting how Craig’s influence continues to shape the future of cycling in Ireland.
