Major Road Construction Project in Clare Causes Traffic Delays

Residents and commuters in south Clare and north Limerick can expect significant traffic disruptions for the next four months due to the ongoing construction of the Coonagh to Knockalisheen distributor road. This €31 million project aims to improve local infrastructure and enhance connectivity between key areas, but it will also bring temporary road closures that could impact daily travel.

The project involves the creation of a 2.1 km urban dual carriageway, along with major upgrades to existing roads. In addition, new pedestrian and cycling facilities will be developed to meet DMURS standards. Other components include the relocation of utility services, the installation of new sewer systems, and the enhancement of green spaces through landscaping efforts. These improvements are expected to provide long-term benefits to the community by reducing congestion and improving safety.

Road Closures and Diversion Plans

Clare County Council has announced that road closures will take place along the Knockalisheen Road, which is located on the border between County Clare and County Limerick. The closure period is scheduled to last from August to December, divided into two phases.

During the first phase, from August 11 to September 15, the road will be closed between Brennan’s Cross and Hartigan’s Villas. Only local access will be permitted during this time. The second phase will see the road closed from Brennan’s Cross to the Junction at Moyross Avenue, from September 15 to December 15.

Diversions have been put in place to help manage traffic flow during the construction. Residents and drivers are encouraged to plan their routes carefully and follow signage to avoid delays.

Community Engagement and Resident Concerns

To address concerns and provide updates, the Coonagh to Knockalisheen Project Team will hold a residents’ meeting at the Moyross Community Centre on Tuesday, July 29, from 4pm to 6pm. All residents in the affected area are invited to attend.

Wills Bros Ltd, the company responsible for the construction work, has confirmed its participation in the event. The meeting will focus on discussing the project’s progress, particularly the upcoming road closures.

The project team has acknowledged that the closures may cause inconvenience for local residents and businesses. They have pledged to listen to concerns and address them where possible. Open communication is seen as a key part of ensuring the project runs smoothly while minimizing disruption.

Long-Term Benefits of the Project

While the short-term impacts of the road closures are undeniable, the project is expected to deliver lasting improvements to the region. The new dual carriageway and upgraded infrastructure will support increased traffic flow, reduce congestion, and create safer conditions for pedestrians and cyclists.

The development of new sewer systems and landscaping will also contribute to the overall quality of life in the area. By investing in these essential upgrades, the council aims to support future growth and enhance the connectivity between communities in south Clare and north Limerick.

As the construction progresses, residents are advised to stay informed about any changes to the schedule or diversion routes. Regular updates from the project team will help ensure that everyone remains aware of the latest developments.
