Israeli Military Advances in Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis
Israeli tanks have entered the southern and eastern districts of Deir al-Balah, a city in Gaza, marking the first time such an incursion has occurred in this area. According to Israeli sources, the military believes that some hostages may be held in these regions. The area is densely populated with Palestinians who have been displaced due to the ongoing conflict, which has lasted over 21 months. Many of them fled west or south after Israel issued an evacuation order, claiming it aimed to destroy Hamas’s infrastructure and capabilities.
The tank shelling in the area resulted in damage to homes and mosques, leading to the deaths of at least three Palestinians and injuring several others, according to local medics. In the southern region of Khan Younis, an Israeli airstrike killed at least five people, including a husband and wife along with their two children, who were staying in a tent, as reported by medical officials.

Gaza’s health ministry stated in its daily update that at least 130 Palestinians were killed and more than 1,000 injured by Israeli gunfire and military strikes across the territory in the past 24 hours. This figure represents one of the highest death tolls in recent weeks. There was no immediate response from Israeli authorities regarding the incidents in Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis.
Hostage Situation and Family Concerns
Israeli sources indicated that the military had previously avoided entering Deir al-Balah due to suspicions that Hamas might be holding hostages there. It is believed that at least 20 of the remaining 50 hostages are still alive. Families of the hostages have expressed concern for their relatives and demanded explanations from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defence Minister Israel Katz, and the army chief about how they plan to protect the hostages.
The Hostage Families Forum Headquarters issued a statement saying, “The people of Israel will not forgive anyone who knowingly endangered the hostages – both the living and the deceased. No one will be able to claim they didn’t know what was at stake.”

Humanitarian Crisis and Health Challenges
Gaza health officials have warned of potential “mass deaths” in the coming days due to hunger, which has already claimed at least 19 lives since Saturday. Hospitals are running out of fuel, food aid, and medicine, putting vital operations at risk. Health ministry spokesperson Khalil Al-Deqran mentioned that medical staff are surviving on one meal a day, while hundreds of people visit hospitals daily, suffering from fatigue and exhaustion.
In southern Gaza, an Israeli undercover unit detained Marwan Al-Hams, head of Gaza’s field hospitals, during a raid that resulted in the death of a local journalist and injuries to another person outside a field medical facility run by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). An ICRC spokesperson confirmed that they treated patients injured in the incident but did not comment further on their status. They expressed deep concern about the safety and security around the field hospital.
Impact on Ceasefire Talks
The incursion into Deir al-Balah and the increasing number of casualties appear to be complicating efforts to secure a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel. Talks mediated by Qatar and Egypt, with U.S. backing, face challenges as a result of the escalating violence. A Hamas official stated that the group is angered by the rising death toll and humanitarian crisis, which could affect the talks on a 60-day truce and hostage deal.
Aid Delays and Humanitarian Struggles
UNRWA, the U.N. refugee agency dedicated to Palestinians, reported receiving desperate messages from Gaza warning of starvation, including from its own staff, as food prices have skyrocketed. The agency stated that enough food is stockpiled in warehouses to feed the entire population for over three months. They urged the lifting of the siege and the safe and large-scale entry of aid.
Gaza’s health ministry reported that at least 67 people were killed by Israeli fire as they waited for U.N. aid trucks to enter Gaza. At least 36 aid seekers were killed a day earlier. Israel’s military claimed that its troops fired warning shots to remove what it described as an “immediate threat.” They also suggested that the casualty figures might be inflated.
Israel’s military emphasized that it views the transfer of humanitarian aid into Gaza as a top priority and works to facilitate its entry in coordination with the international community.
Ongoing Conflict and Its Consequences
The war began when Hamas-led militants attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages back to Gaza, according to Israeli reports. Since then, the Israeli military campaign against Hamas in Gaza has resulted in the deaths of over 59,000 Palestinians, displaced almost the entire population, and caused a severe humanitarian crisis.
