RAY MASSEY: Get Ready for a Chat with AI Mercedes

A New Era of Conversation with the Mercedes-Benz CLA

The Mercedes-Benz CLA is making waves in the automotive world, not just for its sleek design but also for its advanced AI capabilities. If you’ve ever wondered if your car could hold a conversation, this model might just change your mind. During a recent road test in Denmark, I had the chance to interact with the CLA and found it both fascinating and a bit unsettling.

The new CLA features an AI system that allows it to answer questions and even engage in what the manufacturer calls ‘complex conversations’. This is a significant upgrade from previous models, offering a more interactive experience than systems like Amazon’s Alexa. However, there are moments when the AI seems to falter, especially when faced with tricky or philosophical questions. For instance, when I asked, “If everything I say is a lie, am I now telling the truth?” the AI simply changed the subject, much like a politician avoiding a tough question.

Design and Performance

The CLA 250+ is the all-electric version of the model, set to arrive in the UK by autumn. It’s slightly larger than its predecessor but still maintains a compact feel inside. The back seat may be a bit tight, but the front cabin offers generous space. The boot capacity is impressive at 405 litres, with an additional 101 litres in the front trunk under the bonnet.

Exterior styling is sporty, featuring a coupe-like silhouette that blends elegance with a modern edge. The front grille is adorned with 142 illuminated LED stars, adding a touch of luxury. Inside, the dashboard is dominated by a 14-inch display, with an optional MBUX Superscreen that can be extended for the front passenger. The interior combines modern aesthetics with some elements that verge on looking cheap, creating a mix of sophistication and practicality.

Urban and Country Driving

In urban environments, the CLA delivers a smooth and quiet ride, perfect for city driving. It comes equipped with various sensors that alert the driver to nearby vehicles, obstacles, and cyclists, enhancing safety. On country roads, the CLA shows its more spirited side. Powered by an 85kW battery and a 200kW electric motor, it accelerates from 0 to 62mph in 6.7 seconds, reaching a top speed of 130mph. The two-speed gearbox ensures a responsive drive, making overtaking effortless.

With a claimed range of 484 miles, the CLA can easily handle a 400-mile journey between London and Edinburgh on a single charge. A quick 10-minute charge on a fast charger can provide a 200-mile boost, making long trips more manageable.

Pricing and Availability

The CLA is not inexpensive, with prices starting at £45,615 for the Sport Edition, rising to £51,770 for the top-tier AMG Line Premium Edition. Unfortunately, these prices exceed the £37,000 cap for the Government’s Electric Car Grant, which limits eligibility for some models.

Future Models and Features

While the 250+ version is the first to launch in the UK, the more powerful 350 4Matic variant, with a 260kW motor, will follow soon. It accelerates from 0 to 62mph in 4.9 seconds, offering a more muscular drive. From early next year, a petrol-electric hybrid version will be introduced, combining a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor integrated into the transmission.

An estate version, the CLA Shooting Brake, is also in the pipeline. Set to go on sale next spring, it features a panoramic glass starlight roof with 158 embedded stars. The estate model promises a range of up to 472 miles, making it a versatile option for families.

Verdict

The new all-electric CLA 250+ is a smart and sporty choice, offering decent acceleration and a comfortable ride. For those seeking more power, the 350 4Matic all-wheel drive model is worth considering. Either way, the CLA ensures you’ll never be short of conversation, thanks to its advanced AI system.

Challenges with the Electric Car Grant Scheme

Despite the positive aspects of the new CLA, there are concerns about the Electric Car Grant scheme. While the initiative offers discounts of up to £3,750, it has complex criteria that determine eligibility based on a vehicle’s environmental impact and production. Additionally, the grant is only available for cars priced below £37,000, excluding popular models like Teslas. This creates additional bureaucracy for dealers, as they must apply for approval, potentially complicating the process for consumers.
