A New Chapter for Kathryn Thomas
Kathryn Thomas has expressed that she “needed something new” after stepping away from her role on Operation Transformation. This decision marks a significant shift in her career and personal life, one that she is embracing with enthusiasm and determination.
Joining Dublin’s Q102 is a bold move for Thomas, showcasing her willingness to explore fresh opportunities and challenge herself in new ways. Embracing Change and Growth
Since deciding to leave Operation Transformation, Thomas has been immersed in various projects, including her documentary, The Skinny Jab Revolution. She described this period as a time of discovery, where she was “digging my teeth into something new.”
Thomas has two children, Ellie, who is seven years old, and Grace, who is three. During this time, she was heavily focused on her family life, but she felt the need for a change. “I was very much ensconced in ‘mom mode’ for a few years,” she said. “I knew I was ready for a new challenge.”
Her time on Operation Transformation came to an end even though RTÉ wrapped the show. She had been part of the program for 13 years and found that she thrives when engaged and challenged. “I like challenges,” she added.

Saying ‘Yes’ to New Opportunities
Walking away from a job that you excel at and that provides financial stability can be difficult, especially when you want something different. Thomas admitted that there is a lot of advice out there, particularly for women, about setting boundaries. As a people pleaser, she often said yes by default. However, she noticed that she was saying “no” to opportunities that were coming her way.
She explained that this might have been due to timing, as her children were young, and her confidence wasn’t where it was. “When you have a new baby, your confidence isn’t where it was, you’ve got a lot going on,” she said.
After running Pure Results, she realized that she was turning down opportunities when the timing was right. “This is my year of yes,” she said.
Seeking Guidance for a Smooth Transition
Before making the move to Q102, the Carlow native sought advice and guidance. She mentioned that some of her friends had taken a course with Mary Curtis, a business coach at Praesta. “When you have made a decision that you want to change, you need to know what is the best way to implement that,” she said.
Sometimes, it’s about getting a bit of guidance or having someone sit opposite you and speak out loud. “Having them agree or tell you what you need to do helps you understand what you need to do, what is holding you back, and how to work through those areas,” she added.
Navigating the Changing Media Landscape
Many people might assume that leaving a job is just about personal preference, but Thomas emphasized that it’s more about making the right decisions and adapting to changes. “For some people, it is not easy to make a change, but for me, I knew I needed to,” she said.
She highlighted the rapid changes happening in the media landscape and other industries, such as tech, AI, teaching, and the public sector. “The world is changing at such a rapid pace in all of those sectors,” she noted. “It’s about recognizing your own capabilities, needs, and wants, as well as recognizing that life is short.”
Thomas believes that enjoying your work every day is essential. Sometimes, it’s not about leaving your current workplace but talking to someone about shifting roles. “Sometimes it’s about talking to somebody about a shift left or right,” she concluded.
