James Gunn Reveals Telling Henry Cavill He Wouldn’t Return as Superman: “It Was Unfair”

James Gunn Shares the Emotional Moment of Telling Henry Cavill He Wasn’t Returning as Superman

James Gunn, the head of DC Studios, recently opened up about the difficult decision to inform Henry Cavill that he would not be reprising his role as Superman in the new DC Universe. The revelation came during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, where Gunn reflected on the confusing timeline surrounding Cavill’s return and eventual departure from the project.

Gunn explained that the situation was complicated by the fact that Cavill had initially announced his return to the role before later stepping back. “We were dealing with trying to figure out if we could take the job at DC Studios, and we’re talking to David Zaslav and all the legal people there, and figuring out what our deals would be,” he recalled. “And the day our deal closed, all of a sudden they were announcing that Henry was back.”

The news left Gunn stunned. “I’m like, what is going on? Like, we know what the plan is, the plan was to come in and do Superman,” he said, referencing the 2025 film that will feature David Corenswet in the titular role.

Gunn admitted that the situation was particularly tough for Cavill. “That was really unfortunate, I’m like, this poor guy,” he said. “And so Peter [Safran] and I knew the right thing to do is to sit down with [Cavill] and talk to him.”

The conversation with Cavill went smoothly, according to Gunn. “He was an absolute gentleman, a great guy about it. He said, ‘The only thing I ask is that I’m able to reveal it myself as opposed to it coming from you guys.’”

Gunn described the moment of breaking the news to Cavill as “really unfair to him and was a total bummer.” He also hinted that external pressures played a role in the decision. “There were outside influences who wanted to take on what they wanted to do at DC and were trying to force their way, and it just was never a part of the equation.”

Despite not returning as Superman, Cavill and David Corenswet maintained communication before the latter took on the iconic role. At the London premiere of the film, Corenswet shared his experience of exchanging letters with previous Supermans, including Cavill and Tyler Hoechlin. “They were very encouraging and we had a lovely exchange,” Corenswet said. “I’m excited to meet them one day, it’ll be great when we can all get in a room together.”

When asked if it would be confusing to recast Cavill in another role within the DC Universe, Gunn responded positively. “No, as another character? Absolutely not. I talked to him about it on that day. I would love to put Henry in something.”

Gunn’s comments highlight the complexities of reshaping the DC Universe while respecting the legacy of its characters and actors. As the studio moves forward with its plans, the focus remains on creating a cohesive and compelling story for fans.
