Suspect Identified in Border Patrol Agent’s Shooting at NYC Park

Incident at Fort Washington Park

A suspect has been taken into custody following the shooting of an off-duty United States Border Patrol agent in New York City. The incident occurred just before midnight on Saturday in Fort Washington Park, located in the Washington Heights neighborhood of upper Manhattan. According to the New York Police Department, the shooting took place at 11:51 p.m.

The 42-year-old Border Patrol agent sustained injuries to his face and arm and was transported to Harlem Hospital for treatment. Authorities reported that the agent is expected to survive. The location of the attack was near the Little Red Lighthouse in Fort Washington Park, which is situated directly under the George Washington Bridge. Security footage played a crucial role in identifying and apprehending the suspect.

A witness provided police with information that she and the off-duty agent were sitting together on the rocks near the edge of the Hudson River when the suspect and his accomplice approached them on a scooter. According to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the security video showed two men on a scooter stopping near where the victim and witness were seated. The passenger of the scooter got off and approached the victim, while the driver remained with the vehicle.

New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch addressed the incident during a news conference on Sunday afternoon. She explained that the video depicted the suspected shooter, identified as 21-year-old Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez, drawing a firearm. The Border Patrol agent also pulled out a handgun to defend himself. Tisch noted that the officer recognized he was being robbed and drew his service weapon in self-defense.

According to Tisch, the suspect opened fire first, leading to an exchange of gunfire. The suspect then appeared to limp back to his alleged accomplice, and the two fled on the scooter. Mora Nunez later arrived at a hospital in the Bronx with gunshot wounds to the groin and leg, consistent with the injuries shown in the security footage. The suspect underwent surgery and is currently in custody at Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx.

Tisch stated that there is no indication the Border Patrol agent was targeted because of his job. She also mentioned that Mora Nunez has a history of criminal activity, including two prior arrests for domestic violence in New York. Additionally, he has an active warrant for missing a court date on one of the cases. The NYPD is also seeking him for a robbery in December 2024 and a felony assault stabbing in January 2025, both occurring in the Bronx.

Mora Nunez is also wanted in Massachusetts for allegedly stealing guns from a pawn shop in February 2025. His accomplice remains at large. New York City Mayor Eric Adams expressed concern about the suspect’s actions, stating that he has inflicted violence in the city within a short period. Adams emphasized that once charged for the recent crimes, attempted murder will be added to Mora Nunez’s record.

Adams visited the wounded Border Patrol agent in the hospital on Sunday and confirmed that the officer is expected to make a full recovery. This incident follows another shooting that occurred roughly two weeks earlier in McAllen, Texas, where a gunman attacked the entrance to the Border Patrol sector annex. The suspect in that case, Ryan Louis Mosqueda, was confronted and killed by Border Patrol agents and local police. Two officers and a Border Patrol employee were injured in that attack, and the motive remains under investigation.
