Jeff Lynne Cancels Shows After Illness, Says He’s ‘Gutted’

Jeff Lynne Steps Back from ELO Tour Amid Health Concerns

Jeff Lynne, the legendary musician and founder of the Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), has shared that he is now at home recovering after canceling the final shows of his farewell tour due to illness. The 77-year-old artist was forced to withdraw from the BST Hyde Park event on Sunday following medical advice, as he continues treatment for a “systemic infection.” This comes after he had already canceled a performance in Manchester earlier in the week.

The Hyde Park concert was intended to be a “final goodbye” for ELO, marking the end of their farewell US tour, Over And Out. In a statement posted on social media, Lynne expressed his disappointment at having to cancel the last two shows. He said: “I am now at home recuperating. I was absolutely gutted to have to cancel the final two shows. I send my heartfelt thanks to all of the fans as well as my band and crew for all their support and love.”

The cancellation of the Hyde Park event led to the entire day’s festival being called off by BST organizers. Ticket holders have been informed and are receiving refunds through their ticket agents. An earlier statement from the festival noted that Lynne was “heartbroken” to miss the show and confirmed that no rescheduling would take place as he focuses on his recovery.

This latest setback follows ELO’s earlier withdrawal from a scheduled performance in Manchester on July 10. The band, known for their iconic 1970s hits such as Mr. Blue Sky, Livin’ Thing, and Telephone Line, first formed in Birmingham in 1970. They gained fame for blending orchestral arrangements with futuristic rock, creating a unique sound that defined an era.

Although ELO disbanded in 1986, Lynne revived the group in 2014, leading to a highly successful comeback performance at BST Hyde Park. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017 and has produced multiple albums that topped the UK charts. Lynne himself was honored with an OBE in 2020 and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2015.

Fans and music enthusiasts remain hopeful for Lynne’s full recovery, as his contributions to the world of rock and pop continue to resonate. While the future of ELO remains uncertain, his legacy as a musical pioneer is firmly established.
