Inside CPSB’s Summer Tech Camp: Shaping Tomorrow, One Circuit at a Time

A New Kind of Summer Camp: Tech Education for Young Innovators

In the heart of Lake Charles, Louisiana, a unique summer program is offering students an alternative to traditional summer activities. At the Calcasieu Parish School Board’s Technology Center, kids are swapping swimming pools for soldering irons, diving into the world of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) through hands-on learning experiences.

This innovative camp isn’t just about having fun — it’s about preparing students for the future. From robotics to 3D printing, participants are gaining exposure to advanced tools that many won’t encounter until high school or even college. The goal is to equip young learners with the skills they’ll need in an increasingly tech-driven world.

Mary Beth Sonnier, a CPSB Technology Facilitator, emphasizes the importance of early exposure to technology. “It’s really important for the kids to have access to this technology — and not just have it, but know how to use it safely,” she said. “The laptops are there for them, and they have a bunch of features that maybe we don’t want the kids to be using freely. Even though they own the device now, we want them to learn webcam safety and how to be good digital citizens.”

Each camper leaves the camp with a laptop of their own, allowing them to continue their learning at home. Over the course of the week, students work on projects from start to finish, showcasing their creations and demonstrating what they’ve learned.

One recent project involved building blacklights. Students explored the fundamentals of circuitry and light design, gaining practical knowledge through experimentation. Anissa Fontenot, a Camp Facilitator, shared her excitement about the process. “They actually got to build their own black light yesterday,” she said. “The process of them going through and understanding how the circuits work, and seeing that they can actually build it themselves. When the light went off on their blacklight, the light went off in their brain too.”

This kind of experiential learning is invaluable. It allows students to see the real-world applications of what they’re studying, fostering curiosity and creativity. By engaging with technology in a safe and structured environment, kids develop critical thinking skills and a deeper understanding of how things work.

Beyond the technical skills, the camp also focuses on teaching digital citizenship. Students learn about online safety, responsible internet use, and the importance of protecting their personal information. These lessons are essential in today’s digital age, where technology plays a central role in daily life.

The impact of the program extends beyond the classroom. In a region that has faced significant challenges, including devastating storms in recent years, the tech camp represents more than just summer fun — it’s a beacon of hope and opportunity. By investing in education and innovation, the Calcasieu Parish School Board is helping to shape a brighter future for its students.

Through programs like this, young learners are not only gaining valuable skills but also discovering their potential. As they build, code, and create, they’re preparing themselves for the demands of the modern workforce while developing a lifelong love for learning. This summer camp is more than just a way to spend time — it’s a stepping stone toward a future filled with possibilities.
